One Direction Set A ‘Perfect’ Record As They Surpass The Beatles

When One Direction were formed just five-years ago on Simon Cowell’s reality show, most people would have assumed that they would be a flash in the pan, here today gone tomorrow. As every One Direction fan knows, Harry Styles, Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan, and Zayn Malik were formed into a boy-band by Cowell. The boys had been eliminated as solo singers at the “bootcamp” stage of the show before Cowell threw them a lifeline and One Direction was born.

One Direction went all the way to the final of the 2010 season before placing third. Despite not winning the show, rumors were already circulating that One Direction were to sign with Cowell’s SyCo whatever the outcome of the season finale. Few would have believed that less than five years later, One Direction would be about to release their fifth album. Despite losing former member Zayn Malik, who walked out back in March, One Direction are about to complete their fourth massive world tour in as many years.

Even those who dislike One Direction’s clean cut and inoffensive style of pop music cannot deny the incredible success that five young men have enjoyed. It must be borne in mind that the members of One Direction were all only 16- or 17-years-old when they were thrust into the spotlight. These were five boys who were plucked from obscurity and shot to superstardom in the blink of an eye.

The workload thrust upon the members of One Direction was nothing short of incredible. They completed four 80-day tours. They have made thousands of promotional appearances around the world and almost unbelievably, One Direction have won an incredible 118 music industry awards out of 210 nominations. No-one will be terribly surprised if One Direction bag another handful of awards for their current tour and forthcoming album.

The demands placed on One Direction have been absolutely relentless. At times, the strain has shown. It was reported in the Inquisitr earlier this year that Niall Horan and Liam Payne have at times shown their frustration at their inability to have any kind of “normal life.” Payne used Twitter to hit out at fans and paparazzi photographers who made him “feel like a cornered animal.”

Of course, as One Direction have discovered, the lack of a private life is all too often the price of fame. Despite the numerous challenges, they have faced One Direction are appreciative of their fans. They understand that without those fans, One Direction are nothing. One Direction fans are all too often criticized for what many see as an unhealthy obsession with the band.

All too often, the kindness of most fans is overlooked by a media keen for a story. One Direction fans raise massive amounts for charities supported by the band, and just this week, fans even went to the trouble of placing an advertisement in the music press congratulating the band on their forthcoming record release.

It is the demands of the fans that have driven One Direction to continued success. That success has reached a new landmark as CNN reports that One Direction have just surpassed a record set by the Beatles. One Direction’s single “Perfect” has entered the new Billboard Hot 100 at No. 10, marking the group’s fifth top 10 new entry. This is the highest among all groups.

The latest top 10 debut means that One Direction have now surpassed the Beatles, who crashed into the top 10 four times. According to UTV Taylor Swift holds the overall record with 12 debut top 10 entries.

One Direction continue to smash records but you have to wonder whether we will look back in 40 years with the same kind of nostalgia that people have for Beatles songs.
