Daniel Radcliffe Admits That Alcohol Was The Easiest Way For Him To ‘Escape Being Self-Conscious’

Daniel Radcliffe has admit before that he struggled a bit with alcohol abuse, and while he doesn’t want people to remember him as the kid who was drunk on the set of Harry Potter, he did admit that he used alcohol as a way to battle being self-conscious.

Back in 2014, Daniel Radcliffe, best known for his role in the Harry Potter series, admit that he had turned to alcohol to help him cope with the pressures of becoming an international star. According to Hello magazine, back in 2014, Daniel admitted that once the pressure started to become a problem for him, he turned to alcohol to help him cope. He even admitted that during his troubled time, he would black out nearly every time that he would drink.

So what was it that was causing Daniel such troubles that lead him to his problem with Alcohol? He recently admitted that alcohol was his way of avoiding feeling self-conscious about himself. Where did his problem with being self-conscious come from? According to People magazine, it stemmed from his rising fame as a child star.

Growing up as a child star has enough pressures of it’s own, especially when someone so young gets involved with a project as big as the Harry Potter series. There is always the question of “what comes next,” and things like that can weigh heavily on the mind of someone in their teen years. So is it any surprise that Daniel would feel self-conscious as he grew up, and his time with the Harry Potter series was coming to a close?

While talking with Playboy magazine, Daniel reportedly stated that he used alcohol as his way to battle being self-conscious whenever he went out.

“Anytime I’d go out to dance, camera phones would come out. That would make me very self-conscious, and what’s the easiest way to escape being self-conscious? Alcohol is a quick way of doing that.”

He has mentioned in the past that alcohol not only made him a loud, inappropriate mess, but also that it made him become somewhat of a recluse.

“I was a recluse at 20. It was pathetic – it wasn’t me. I’m a fun, polite person and it turned me into a rude bore. For a long time people were saying to me, ‘We think you have a problem,’ but in the end I had to come to the realization myself.”

While Daniel was very open about his struggle with alcoholism in the past, he claims that he always has to be careful about who he talks to and exactly what he says when it comes to his past battles with drinking because he still fears that his comments can and will be turned around into something negative.

Since sobering up, Daniel believes that he is now not only returning to the fun-loving individual he always was, but that he is also losing some of his self-consciousness, and because of that he believes that his popularity among his fans is continuing to increase.
