China bans snake poisoned chicken

Chinese officials have banned a snake poisoned chicken dish on animal cruelty grounds.

The dish, popular is some southern areas of China, is made by forcing a snake to bit a live chicken until it dies. The dish was promoted as having detox benefits, and surprisingly isn’t venomous.

A video of the practice on popular Chinese website Sina caused outraged locally, with many saying that the practice was disgusting and cruel.

Reuters notes that another dish popular in the area is monkey brains scooped from a live animal.
