Jim Parsons Talks Kaley Cuoco Make-Out Session On ‘The Big Bang Theory’

The Big Bang Theory shocked fans a couple of weeks ago by having two of the show’s beloved characters — Jim Parsons’ Sheldon Cooper and Kaley Cuoco’s Penny — lock lips for an extended period of time. Viewers will recall Sheldon suggested Penny make out with another man since Leonard’s similar infidelity was causing problems in their relationship. Helpfully, Sheldon also mentioned he was now unattached, following his break up with Amy Farrah Fowler.

And the two kissed. Passionately. And then, Leonard woke up.

Now Jim Parsons is telling Glamour blogger Jessica Radloff how that all went down — and how he felt about it. To hear Jim tell it, getting some lip action on with Kaley was no problem at all. Of course, now in season 9, the actors are all close friends, and Parsons and Cuoco spent a lot of quality professional time together in the early years. The passionate kiss was just another day at the office.

“The first time we rehearsed [the kiss], it was literally just like an extension of the verbal dance we’ve been doing for eight and a half years. It’s always awkward to a degree, but this was shockingly easy. We had so much fun. And it was so much fun to do it live in front of the audience. I kept thinking, ‘When a moment like that is going on, they’re going to know it’s coming and start laughing before we do it.'”

Executive producer Steven Molaro told CBS that the kiss between Penny and Sheldon was actually edited down for the final show. That means the studio audience got a lot more of an eyeful than the viewers at home. The studio fans screamed on cue, and according to Molaro, were happy to keep up the enthusiasm as long as it took.

Jim Parsons is in a long-term relationship with his partner Todd Spiewak, so there were no rumors that Kaley and Jim might be getting cozy behind the scenes. That wasn’t the case for Cuoco and her on-screen love Johnny Galecki, however. After Cuoco confirmed her split from husband Ryan Sweeting just as Penny and Leonard got married and had some conflicts, the rumor mill began to circulate that she and Johnny might be reunited. The two actually dated in secret for two years during the show’s early seasons. Both actors took to Instagram to shut down the stories.

Kaley captioned her photograph with a clear statement that she and Galecki are just friends, by saying “So sorry to disappoint, but no home wreckers or secret flings going on here. Me and @sanctionedjohnnygalecki are just the best of buds – Leonard and Penny will just have to suffice!!!”. Galecki did the same on his Instagram account, according to ABC News.

Parsons and Radloff also discussed Sheldon’s relationship with Leonard. Although Leonard and Penny are married, the roommates are still sharing space, despite an updated roommate agreement and Sheldon’s temporary regression to 2003 — the last time he was not co-habiting with Penny’s new husband. Parsons said he doesn’t know what the writers have planned for the progression of that relationship. He noted that Sheldon and Amy’s relationship progressed over many seasons, and in recent episodes included scenes that would have been unthinkable when Amy first came into Sheldon’s life.

Mayim Bialik, who plays Amy, also told Radloff that the issue of the ring will be revisited as Sheldon and Amy reassess the status of their relationship.

The Big Bang Theory airs Monday nights on CBS.
