Former Nickelodeon star Amanda Bynes pleaded not guilty on Wednesday to drunk driving during an incident earlier this year in which she reportedly rear-ended a Los Angeles County Sherriff’s patrol car.
Bynes was not required to appear in Beverly Hills Superior Court, where her lawyer entered the not guilty plea on her behalf.
According to the LA Times, the 26-year-old Easy A actress was arrested on April 6 about 3am in West Hollywood. Authorities at the time reported that Bynes refused to take a sobriety test after grazing a cop’s vehicle with her black BMW.
After the arrest, Bynes took to Twitter to defend herself against the drunk driving allegations.
“I can’t help but laugh at all of you writing fake stories about me,” she tweeted May 27.
“I was not in any hit and runs. I don’t drink so the DUI is false.”
Amanda then jokingly — or maybe not — reached out via Twitter this Tuesday to President Barack Obama asking him to intervene in the case – and have the police officer who arrested her fired.
”Hey Barack Obama… I don’t drink. Please fire the cop who arrested me. I also don’t hit and run. The end.”
While Bynes’ plea to Obama was ignored by most, the outlandish tweet the caught the attention of daytime talk show host Anderson Cooper, 45, who poked fun at the actress’ predicament during Wednesday night’s segment of his Anderson Cooper 360 show.
“If you don’t know who she is, join the club,” Cooper quipped. “She apparently used to be on Nickelodeon, then was in the movie ‘Hairspray’ and some other movies that you’ve probably never heard of. We’re not making light of the charges against her — it’s serious stuff. But the reason why she’s on the Ridiculist is because like any sensible, quasi-celebrity, she has taken to Twitter to defend herself.”

ABC7 reports that a pretrial hearing for Amanda Bynes is set for July 18. If convicted, she faces up to six months in prison.
