Patient Yorkie Puppy Waits Two Days For Owner at Rest Stop

patient yorkie puppy reunited

A patient Yorkie puppy’s resolve paid off after a harrowing two days (which is like weeks for a little baby dog) when he was mistakenly left behind by his owner at a Missouri rest stop.

The patient Yorkie puppy’s name was Rambo (awwww!) and owner Michael Siau is a truck driver. Siau and his Yorkie pup hit the road as a team, driving and stopping together as Siau drove through Hannibal, Missouri.

But at that stop, the Yorkie puppy’s patience was tested. As is a curious puppy’s wont, Rambo hopped out of the truck to go exploring. And as parents are often prone to do, Siau thought his curious Yorkie puppy was tucked up quietly snoozing in part of the truck, and not skipping through the flowerbeds at the truck stop.

So Siau left, and the patient Yorkie puppy was left behind. Siau says that he didn’t even think Rambo would hop out, as the mischievous baby-dog hadn’t been so curious in the past:

“Didn’t even cross my mind that he might jump out. He never has before… I jumped back in the truck, put it in gear and drove off. And I just thought he was in the back asleep.”

According to the AP, Siau and Rambo endured a harrowing two-day separation, made all the more poignant by the fact that Rambo’s dad was also a traveling companion of his trucker owner, and that the elder doggie had met a sudden and sad end on the road.

Ollie also made trips with Siau, but was struck and killed by a vehicle last year- and in mourning, Siau was unable to work for six months. For Siau, the thought of losing another puppy was unimaginable, but he knew he didn’t have time yet to retrace his steps and look for his patient Yorkie puppy.

But as you know, the story had a happy ending. Rambo and Siau were reunited. After Siau deduced that his furry pal hadn’t been seen since Hannibal, he called local animal control chief Tim Ledbetter and explained his situation. The AP reports that Ledbetter managed to find and seize the patient Yorkie pup, and the news org explains:

“Sure enough, little Rambo was there, sitting patiently… But he might not have been there much longer. Ledbetter said a family that had stopped at the rest area was just about to adopt the apparently lost puppy.

“’In about 60 seconds, he would have been gone,’ Ledbetter said.”

Siau and his patient Yorkie puppy then hit the road together, bound for Tennessee.

Are you kidding me? Even in my own house I think my puppy is in one place & next think I know he's in another. The guy obviously loves his pets!

Don't be so harsh, this man was in a frenzy to find his pup. I have had days like this, my poodle loved the car and going for rides. She would get in the floorboard and lay down in an area which of course I couldn't see. She was a very sharp cookie. Then when she thought we had gone far enough she would climb out and get in the jump seat. Silly dog.

Yorkies are small and quick and very curious. Rambo needs to have a bell on his collar or a locator tag that will signal when he's out of range and his dad needs to check his whereabouts every time he gets into/out of his truck. And if he's going to travel with his dog, he needs to be willing to retrace his steps or whatever is necessary to find his lost pet…he's lucky Rambo was still alive and not roadkill or a wild animal's dinner. Good outcome to a scary experience.

Hmm, so the owner let Rambo's dad get run over, and then leaves Rambo behind? It's called a leash, dude. Use it when near highways or in unfamiliar places.

The first one was hit by a car, the HUMAN didn't learn much from that…

Unable to work because his dog was killed? The dude has some serious mental issues.

he probably had to wait to get a load to come back through Mississippi..it's not like you can whip a semi around and drive however far back to that location at any given time unless you own your own truck…even then it's a pretty hefty fuel bill.

  11. Agree. I do the same with my kids. Leashes rule. Just kidding.

  12. Why just kidding? They do rule!

  13. I guess I could see that when you're a truck driver you can't just turn back right away, it takes time…

I'm not surprised that he stayed and waited they are very loyal. Something happened to my yorkie cocoa I would be lost. They are very smart she alerts me to when I am having a seizure and stays right with me. They are also very curious but I call it nosey.

I love my dog like my own kids and i would be lost without her. I am sure he loved his dog like i love mine. Give the guy a break he is human and has feelings. I date men after i see how he treats his dog or his animals, because how he treats them is how he will treat me, and maybe even better. Im not mental but i can see how he would mourn a dog.

  16. I'm so glad he got his Yorkie back. You people are so cruel, you know who you are!

Maybe he should get a larger dog, since he can't seem to find the small one.

He can do what he wants

  20. Glad that they were reunited. Yorkies are very curious dogs, I have 1 myself. This puppy will get adjusted to his lifestyle on the road

  21. What a happy ending. Best thing to do is get a leash and attach it to something in his vehicle that way you can always know where he is. That way only you can get him in and out of the vehicle. This is not cruel…this is providing protection for your pet. One of those nylon leashes that is long enough to give him freedom to mover around. For a Yorkie, a six foot one is more than adequate and he will adapt quickly and not feet restricted. You should always have your dog leashed for his own protection especially when near highways. They can dart in an instant and even on the grounds of a rest area where cars and trucks are coming in and out quickly. I am so happy for this guy..he obviously loves this little guy. But please take leash precautions…the little dog doesn't know the dangers that are all around him. Great story and thanks to the local Missouri people who helped in finding the dog. Hats off!

  22. The trucker didn't know that he was missing rightaway. And when he did know it …he took appropriate action. Pups can slip out of your sight in an instant…that is why the leash is so important.

  23. Maureen Shade Reader Plus I don't have a yorkie so idk how they would be either

  24. Maureen Shade Reader Yeah that's why I'm saying I guess I understand. I'd like to think that if I was on the road and stopped at a rest stop and then left that I'd notice my dog missing right away. However a lot of ground can be covered in a short period of time and to not know specifically where he was left would take longer. I always try to keep my dog on a leash but he's mighty slippery sometimes!
