Taco Bell Goes Classy, Introduces ‘Upscale’ Menu

Starting this Summer, you’ll be able to get a taco made out of Doritos, a burrito stuffed with Fritos, and a gourmet Mexican taco from celebrity chef Lorena Garcia all in the same restaurant: Taco Bell.

Taco Bell is officially going classy this Summer with a new “upscale” menu.

The menu, created by Garcia, will feature ingredients like fresh cilantro rice, citrus and herb marinated chicken, whole black beans, and fire-roasted corn salsa. Taco Bell executive Brian Niccol said that the new menu will bridge the gap between Taco Bell and fancier sit-in restaurants like Chipotle Mexican Grill and Qdoba Mexican Grill.

Niccol said that Garcia, who will appear on Bravo’s “Top Chef Masters” show this summer, is in the process of transforming Taco Bell’s image. Niccol said:

“Lorena is truly an inspiration, and her new menu and passion for food has inspired a new menu with the freshest flavors that exceed expectations… She brought a lot of new thinking, a lot of fresh approaches to our ingredients that change the flavor profile of the brand.”

Business Week reports that the new items will go on sale on July 5th at locations nationwide. The new Cantina Bell menu will include the Cantina Bowl and the Cantina Burrito, which will both be available with chicken, veggie, or steak for less than $5.

Niccol added:

“Lorena worked incredibly hard as a member of our team to make this happen, starting with 26 recipes and eventually we ended up with eight. She knew her name would be on it, literally – each item will be handed to customers with her signature – and Lorena wanted every layer of taste to be just right, to underscore, as she describes it, her sazón. The test results showed that the hard work paid off and we look forward to taking it national.”

Lorena said:

“Taco Bell approached me with an interesting challenge… They have a passionate fan base that loves the great taste of the classic menu items – and they don’t want to change that. They were looking to keep these menu items and expand their food to offer new flavors with great taste. As a chef, I saw this as an opportunity to help create diversity to the Taco Bell experience, and to introduce and celebrate the tastes and flavors from around the world to millions of customers.”

Do you think the Cantina Bell menu at Taco bell will be a hit?
