Portugal superstar Cristiano Ronaldo will not be on the pitch Saturday, as manager Fernando Santos released him from the national team, along with midfielder Tiago and center-back Ricardo Carvalho. Additionally, Fabio Coentrao suffered an unspecified injury and will not play against Serbia, either.

After clinching a trip to the 2016 UEFA Euro Finals in France next summer, with a 1-0 victory over Denmark, Santos is letting Ronaldo rest and recover from the grueling campaign. The 30-year-old striker will now focus on adding to his goals for Real Madrid.

During a post-match press conference, Santos said he would allow the excused players to return to their respective clubs without delay.

“I had been thinking before that if we won today, we would make changes for the next game, because we recognize that, at this point in time, it would be a little tiring for some of the players.

“I want to see and work with other players, so Cristiano Ronaldo, Tiago, and Ricardo Carvalho have been released from the squad.”

When fans watch Serbia vs. Portugal live stream, they will be able to see just how great this team is, even without CR7. The team is optimistic that they can win their last 2016 Euro qualifier match against Serbia on Saturday. According to Monaco’s Silva, the Euros are a game-by-game type of tournament, and despite his belief that Portugal is one of the great teams to advance, there are other great teams out there.

Teammate Cédric Soares shared the enthusiasm and told A Bola the atmosphere in the locker room was happy with their current situation. Santos is using good leadership, and Portugal seems to have put behind them the disastrous World Cup campaign, which saw them come home in the group stage.

Serbia and Portugal have met three times since the collapse of the former Yugoslavia, with two 1-1 draws in the 2008 UEFA Euro qualifiers and a 2-1 victory for Portugal in their last encounter in Lisbon on March 29, 2015. Portugal moved on at the top of Group I with 18 points, while Serbia has no chance to qualify for the finals with five points.

During the match against Albania, Serbian fans got so rowdy that the football team was penalized with a three-point deduction. This incident tops a terrible qualification campaign for manager Radovan ?ur?i?, in which Serbia earned only four points in seven matches.

However, with Cristiano Ronaldo’s absence, Serbian attackers Tadi?, Ljaji?, and Toši? could take advantage of weaknesses in Santos’ team, which will be giving younger players a chance to play for Portugal. Kolarov and Tadi? will give a Ronaldo-less Portugal difficulties on the left side.

Despite Ronaldo’s absence and Serbia’s dangerous attack, most experts believe Santos’ team will prevail when they visit Belgrade in their last match of the 2016 Euro qualifiers campaign.
