Ubisoft had a strong showing at its E3 2012 press conference yesterday–we got to see some brand new Assassin’s Creed III footage as well as a glimpse of the newly-revealed Splinter Cell: Blacklist. The real treat, however, was Watch Dogs.

Watch Dogs is a gorgeous looking new IP from Ubisoft Montreal that takes place in a not-so-distant future where entire cities are controlled by computers–street lights, power, water, transportation systems and so on.

“Watch Dogs goes beyond the limits of today’s open-world games by giving players the ability to control an entire city,”Jonathan Morin, creative director at Ubisoft, said in a statement. “In Watch Dogs, anything connected to the city’s Central Operating System becomes a weapon. By pushing the boundaries, we can provide players with action and access to information on a scale that’s never been seen in a video game before.”

In Watch Dogs, you play a bit of an antihero whose technical prowess allows him to hack just about anything in the city on a whim. In the gameplay demo, we’re shown a situation where the protagonist shuts down stop lights to cause a pile-up–and he did all that just to get an edge over the “bad guys.”

The ability to hack anything and everything may not be revolutionary–we recently saw that with the Syndicate reboot–but the way it’s handled in the demo looks genuinely exciting, and it’s certainly got me interested to see more.

Speaking of looks, it has to be said that Watch Dogs looks absolutely incredible in just about every respect. That being said, we’ll have to wait and see whether or not the finished product looks anything like what we saw during the press conference.

Ubisoft says that Watch Dogs will release on PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, but we don’t have a release date just yet. Until we do, why not drool over the Watch Dogs gameplay demo from Ubisoft’s press conference? You can find it below.
