Penny Marshall is a loyal Los Angeles Lakers Fan so when a man pretending to be Lamar Odom’s assistant friended her at a Lakers game and began chatting with her via text message she thought a friendship was forming, however the assistant was really after her money.
A source revealed to TMZ that the “assistant” approached her at an NBA game and gave her a fake number they said was for Lamar Odom. For the next several days Penny Marshall texted back and forth with someone she thought was Lamar.
After the texting reached a regular basis the fake Lamar asked her to loan his assistant $5,000 when he was out of town.
Amazingly enough Marshall agreed and handed the assistant $5,000.
The scam only took a few days to complete and Penny may have taken longer to realize she was duped if the scammer had not suddenly stopped texting her back. Penny eventually became suspicious when the text messages stopped arriving and she was not being paid back. Eventually Marshall was able to get a hold of the real Lamar Odom who explained that he does not have a personal assistant and had never text messaged with her.
Penny Marshall can afford the $5,000 but that doesn’t mean she let the scamming assistant get away with their plans, she immediately went to the Los Angeles police department where she filed an official report.
The fake Odom assistant is now wanted for grand theft.
Penny’s rep has no comment regarding the issue at this time.
