Charlie Puth: Can Debut Album Turn Breakout Star To Megastar?

Charlie Puth has undoubtedly been the biggest “breakout” act of 2015. After collaborations with Wiz Khalifa, Meghan Trainor, and Lil Wayne, Puth has shot from obscurity to the top of every “hot list” you care to mention. Of course Charlie caught a huge break when he was invited to work with Wiz Khalifa on “See You Again,” the song commissioned for Furious 7 and regarded as a tribute to Paul Walker. Incredibly “See You Again” has been streamed almost 400 million times on Spotify, and Puth fans have watched the video over one billion times on YouTube.

Charlie’s collaboration with Wiz Khalifa was only released in March, so it is the fastest to reach the one billion views milestone. Puth released his debut single, “Marvin Gaye,” back in February of this year. The collaboration with Meghan Trainor was a huge hit around the world. Charlie hit the No 1 spot in a number of countries, including the UK, Ireland, and New Zealand. The song peaked at No 22 on the Billboard chart. Puth has been nominated for a number of awards for “See You Again” and the song has already won several. As Entertainment Weekly point out, with all of that success under his belt already, it is safe to say that 2015 has been a very good year for Puth.

With a string of successes behind him, it is easy to forget that Puth has only been around for a few months and has not even released an album as yet. Puth will not need to be reminded that the music business is a cruel mistress and artists like Charlie often fade back to obscurity as quickly as they came to our attention. Puth will be well aware that a successful career in music is not secured on the back of a couple of hit singles, especially when you are the “featured artist” on the biggest of those hits.

Puth will undoubtedly understand that he has laid the foundations for a great career with his hit singles but the success of his forthcoming album will make or break his career.

At the end of last month, Puth announced that his debut album will be titled Nine Track Mind and it will be available from January 22. The release date itself may prove to be something of an error as it comes after the important Christmas sales period. However it may be the case that Charlie’s record company wants to avoid the glut of releases that drop around that time of year.

Puth fans will be aware that Warner Music Group originally announced a November 6 release date for Charlie’s album but that date has now slipped by some ten weeks. Puth has demonstrated that he understands the importance of getting his debut release absolutely right. Charlie took to social media platform Twitter to announce the new release date and to say that he needs “some time to perfect it.”

Charlie was absolutely correct when he says “you only get one debut album.”

Whilst the delayed release of Puth’s album may be frustrating for Charlie, his fans, and his record company, the delay does seem to indicate that Puth understands the importance of getting it right. As the old saying goes, you only get one chance to make a first impression. Charlie Puth is undoubtedly the biggest breakout star of 2015, but a successful album release could just turn him into a megastar.
