Nicki Minaj Defended By Lauryn Hill After Stepping Down From Hot97’s Summer Jam

Nicki Minaj is racking up supporters after her controversial decision to pull out of Hot97’s Summer Jam concert, a turn of events that came as a big disappointment to some fans.

Well, backing up, Nicki Minaj herself wasn’t even the first person to call the shots regarding her canceled Summer Jam appearance. It all began when Hot97 DJ Peter Rosenberg dissed Minaj as her new track “Starships” began to play.

Of Minaj’s joint, Rosenberg said:

“We’re all about that real hip-hop. I know there are some chicks in here waiting to sing along with ‘Starships’ later. I’m not talking to y’all right now. F*** that bulls***.”

Soon after Rosenberg dissed Nicki Minaj, Lil Wayne hit up Twitter and swore off the Hot97 concert, saying that “Young Money ain’t doing summer jam,” and the female rapper concurred, saying that Wayne’s decision was final.

As we reported earlier, it was rumored that Lauryn Hill would be replacing Minaj at the show. Ms. Hill almost immediately stepped up to clear the air, confirming that while she was scheduled to appear, the performance was as a favor to Nas and not to replace Nicki Minaj.

Further, Lauryn expressed support at the Roman’s Revenge singer’s resolve in walking away from the massive event. Hill says:

“No disrespect to Nicki, but I need to clear up an inaccuracy. I was not scheduled to be a special guest on her set at Summer Jam, I was invited by Nas to perform with him. I don’t have details on exactly what transpired between the station and the artists, but I do support artists standing by their beliefs, and walking with integrity.”

The former Fugees songstress continued:

“We have to find a better way to commercially exploit music, while giving artists their proper respect. This cannot be done while taking their contributions for granted, or trying to control the scope of their growth and power through threats and fear tactics. We can do better than this, there is a better way, or else ‘we’ (the proverbial we) find ourselves in danger of being hypocrites!!!”

And all appears to be well between Hill and Minaj, as Nicki later tweeted:

“Thank u Lauryn. Nas was coming out on my set, u were coming out 2 perform w/him. That was within my set that was going 2 continue w/foxy.”

Nicki Minaj has since been lobbing some comebacks at “haters.”
