New ‘Nancy Drew’ Show In The Works From ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Creators

The creator’s of Grey’s Anatomy are launching a new twist on Nancy Drew for CBS. Imagine Nancy Drew, the iconic teenaged mystery solver, all grown up, age 30, and working for the NYPD. Yup, that’s the premise.

Entertainment Weekly is reporting that CBS has been looking of a new show with a strong female lead, and the team came up with a revamped Nancy Drew. Will ABC reincarnate the Hardy Boys?

“A contemporary take on the character from the iconic book series. Now in her 30s, Nancy is a detective for the NYPD where she investigates and solves crimes using her uncanny observational skills, all while navigating the complexities of life in a modern world.”

The plan is to match Nancy Drew with the new series Supergirl for an evening of girl power. It seems what is old is new again, as shows like Full House are being upgraded as Fuller House, and a Charmed reunion or upgrade is also in the works.

CinemaBlend reports that CBS is the best place for a Nancy Drew reincarnation because they want it to work as a police procedural.

“Putting this project together are Joan Rater and Tony Phelan, neither of whom are strangers to popular primetime dramas. Both of them have been producers and writers on Grey’s Anatomy for many seasons, and both also had writer/producer roles on Madam Secretary and the short-lived spinoff Law & Order: Trial By Jury. According to Deadline, serving as an executive producer is Dan Jinks, who won an Academy Award for American Beauty and last executive produced the TV series Emily Owens, M.D. and Pushing Daisies. One can only hope Nancy Drew is as vibrant as either of those shows.”

The Nancy Drew books, which were a spinoff of The Hardy Boys, were first written in the 1930s, and quickly became a favorite of girls looking to read about adventure. There have been films and television shows, and it would be hard to find anyone out there that hasn’t heard of Nancy Drew.

Now, instead of gathering neighborhood kids for help, Nancy will be able to access the crime lab, and have a forensics team survey the crime scene.

Flavorwire says that there are over 175 Nancy Drew books, including the spin-off genre. It is said that the new Nancy Drew will not only be a detective with the NYPD, but we will find her “navigating the complexities of life.” They seem to have doubts that a Nancy Drew series can survive.

“The most recent large-scale adaptation of Drew was the 2007 film starring Emma Roberts, which received very mixed reviews.”

Deadline says that writers Joan Rater and Tony Phelan are writing the adaptation. The writers have worked closely with Shonda Rhimes on Grey’s Anatomy. This is the latest project to be developed from a piece of popular fiction.

The AV Club says that the show will examine police procedure, and showing Nancy Drew as being the woman in charge.

“it as a proceduralation—the word we invented to refer to shows just like this. Granted, it’s not an especially heavy proceduralation, because the original books were already mystery stories, but we only get so many chances to use that word as it is. Let us have this one.”
