Facebook Scam Costs Couple Nearly Everything, Here’s How They Lost Their Belongings

One family nearly lost everything they had after falling prey to a vicious Facebook scam. News outlets have shared photos of the inside of their home, and once you see what they were left with after being defrauded by scammers, you’ll definitely think twice about hiring a company with a reputation built on Facebook likes alone.

According to Metro, Becky Szenk and Mark Higgins were preparing to move from their flat in Bilston, England, to one near the city of Wolverhampton. The move was supposed to be the start of a new life chapter for the engaged couple but, unfortunately, now it looks like they’ve taken a step back instead of moving forward.

It all started when the couple hired a moving company they’d found on Facebook named Lee Green to transport their new belongings to their new flat. But unfortunately, what appeared to be a step forward ultimately led to several steps backward after the moving company picked up their belongings. After the hired movers loaded their belongings on their truck, they never saw them again. Apparently, the movers were actually thieves posing as a moving company.

Their story has made international headlines. According to VentureBeat, Facebook has more than one billion active users online. So, this story has caught the attention of many social media users who are now wary of supporting small businesses online. During a recent interview, the 28-year-old bride-to-be recently recounted the series of events that led to their misfortune. She revealed they’d been given specific instructions on how to package their belongings and label the boxes, which only made the removal faster.

“The removal men were racing in and out of the flat. We just thought they were being very professional. But once they drove away we didn’t see them again. Everything we own was packed into that van. It all happened so quickly, around 45 minutes from start to finish. They were supposed to meet my partner at the pub but never turned up. We have been left with virtually nothing.”

Although their actions initially seemed professional, the couple quickly learned the truth. She also shared their reaction to the incident once they’d realized what happened. The couple’s belongings were stolen right before their very eyes. “The men had told me in advance to pack all of our belongings into boxes and label them up clearly,” Becky told Metro. “When I commented on how fast they were completing their work, one of them told me that ‘we have a lot of jobs on today.’ ”

According to the Telegraph UK, all the couple has left is a television they placed inside their vehicle to prevent damage. Needless to say, the couple is distraught over the devastating loss. “I didn’t realize at the time, but they took the most valuable items first. I have never cried more in my life than I did on Friday afternoon,” she added. “I am so distraught that they have taken my engagement ring and my baby’s toys.” The family didn’t “even have a blanket to sleep under” in their new apartment.

She went on to thank those who have come forward to help them during their time of need. “Some people have come forward recently to provide us with essentials, but we still don’t have everything,” Becky said. “I have to put my daughter first, and it’s important that she is looked after before Mark and I have what we need to live.”

According to Mirror Online, the incident is currently being investigated by police but, at this point, no further information has been released regarding the incident.
