Anna Paquin Will Not Be Starring In The New ‘Gambit’ Movie… Maybe

For Marvel fans eagerly looking forward to seeing Rogue in the upcoming Gambit movie, you may want to sit down now. According to Anna Paquin (who has played Rogue in previous movies), she won’t be appearing in the movie… probably.

Recently, after discussion was being had on Twitter about the Gambit movie and Anna Paquin’s involvement in it, one daring fan branched out and asked Anna Paquin straight out if she would be in the new movie. Paquin’s answer was direct and straight to the point with a resounding “No.”

However, after media outlets started quoting Anna Paquin as proof that Rogue would not be appearing in Gambit, the actress backpedaled somewhat. It now seems her reply was not an official statement over Rogue’s involvement in Gambit and she was only basing her information about Rogue’s appearance — or lack of — on her own knowledge of the situation. It is possible that Rogue will appear in Gambit and Paquin just doesn’t know it yet.

Rogue (played by Anna Paquin in the movies) and Gambit, Marvel comics

In the X-Men comics by Marvel, Rogue is romantically involved with Gambit, leading to speculation Anna Paquin would be reprising her Rogue role again. However, in the movie version, Rogue has been portrayed as being a relationship with Iceman (played by Shawn Ashmore). Also, Gambit will have his own love interest in the film, Bella Donna Boudreaux, who will be portrayed by actress, Léa Seydoux.

And that might not be the only complication preventing Anna Paquin’s Rogue from appearing in Gambit. According to Slash Film, the timeline doesn’t work out for Rogue to be played by Anna Paquin. Their calculations place the Gambit movie in the 1980’s, which means Rogue will be quite young, either a baby or a very young child — way too young for Anna Paquin to portray. Slash Films also points out that, if you want to get technical about it, the original denial from Paquin just means that she will not be in Gambit. Potentially Rogue could be there, just portrayed by another actor, which makes sense if their reasoning about the predicted age of Rogue in this movie.

So far little is known about the Gambit movie other than Channing Tatum will be starring in it. According to its IMDb page, it is slated for release in 2016, with Entertainment Weekly stating October 7 as the release date. EW also reported that filming will begin in “early spring”. However, with the recent loss of Gambit’s director, Rupert Wyatt, IGN predicts this scheduled date is a little optimistic.

Besides playing Rogue, Anna Paquin is probably best known for her role in The Piano. She was awarded an Academy Award for this role in 1993 for Best Supporting Actress. She was only 11 at the time, making her the second youngest actor to ever receive the award behind Tatum O’Neal (who won her award at the age of ten for the movie, Paper Moon). Anna Paquin is also well known for her leading role in the HBO series, True Blood, where she played telepathic waitress Sookie Stackhouse, who was romantically involved with a vampire. The vampire in question was played by Stephen Moyer, who later became her husband. During the fifth season of True Blood filming became creative when, by the end of the season, Anna Paquin was six months pregnant with twins to Moyer.

Gambit is anticipated to hit theaters on October 7, 2016.
