Chicago Shootings Leave 8 Dead, 60 Wounded Over 4-Day Period — Mayor Emanuel: ‘There Are Too Many Guns’

The frequency of Chicago shootings reached a nadir this weekend, when four people were left dead and 52 were wounded across the city over a three-day period.

This included 10 people being shot in six different locations in just over one hour early on Saturday morning. During these incidents, a 10-year-old girl and a 13-year-old boy were also left injured after being hit by these bullets.

Unfortunately for residents of Chicago, according to NBC Chicago, this was the second weekend in a row where the city had been under siege by shooters. Just last weekend, eight people were killed by guns while at least 45 other individuals were shot.

On Tuesday morning, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel reacted furiously to the gun violence that has surrounded the city over the last few nights.

Emanuel was asked about the deaths and shootings while at a construction project, and he declared, via Fox Chicago, “I’m going to try and control my anger. We have way too many guns on the streets of the city of Chicago, with too little values and the penalties that don’t match the values of the city of Chicago. The gang-bangers can get access to guns at will without a value system, and without a sense of consequence and penalties.”

This violence has continued on from the weekend though, because on Monday evening, over a seven-hour period, four people were killed and eight others, including an 11-month-old boy, were shot and wounded as a result of the escalating violence.

Rahm Emanuel added that more must be done to create jobs and genuine opportunities for people who are getting caught up in this gangland warfare.

The first individual to die over the weekend in Chicago from a gun-shot was a 25-year-old man, who died on Saturday afternoon at 12:43 p.m. The man got into an argument with 34-year-old Marvin Lee, who shot the man three times. Lee has been arrested after originally trying to insist that the man had broken into his home. It has since been revealed that they knew each other.

Twenty-three-year-old Abraham Barrera was shot at around 3 a.m. on Sunday morning. Barrera was shot in the head as he was driving. His 24-year-old passenger was also shot in the head, and he is currently in critical condition. This shooting was allegedly due to gang violence.

Then, just around an hour later, 28-year-old Marcus Cox was also shot to death on the South Side of Chicago early on Sunday morning. He was hit in the abdomen and later succumbed to his injuries at 3:19 p.m. on the Sunday.

A few hours later, 25-year-old Quinton D. Goins was also shot and killed after he become embroiled in a shootout as he sat in a car.

The 10-year-old girl who was shot over this weekend was one of three people struck on Sunday afternoon at around 12:50 p.m. on the South Side Woodlawn neighborhood of the city. She was grazed in the neck, before then being taken to Comer Children’s Hospital. Police have since confirmed that she is in a good condition.

Earlier on Sunday, the 13-year-old boy, as well as two other teenagers, aged 15 and 16, got caught up in the gunfire at around 2:35 a.m. After hearing a loud noise outside their residence on South Throop, the pair ran to the window where an unknown individual then began to fire bullets at the home. This led to the windows being smashed.

The three teenagers were then taken to hospital, however, there injuries aren’t believed to be life-threatening. They received wounds from debris and broken glass.
