David Tennant To Reprise His Role As ‘Doctor Who’

David Tennant will be reprising his role as Doctor Who alongside Catherine Tate, who will return to her role as the loveable and brash Donna Noble. The pair will be reuniting to play their iconic roles for a series of audio dramas produced by Big Finish, according to a report in Blogtor Who. And, yes, I can hear the groans already from those of you who were hoping we were announcing a return to the television series, but stay with us — it’s still very exciting news.

Big Finish, for those unfamiliar with them, has produced high quality and gripping audiobooks of Doctor Who for some time now, often using the original actors. Stories are released monthly and feature past doctors such as Sylvester McCoy, Nick Baker, and Paul McGann. As well as this, there are the monthly Companion Chronicles, where stories about the Doctor are told through the eyes of his companions. These stories feature voice acting from some of the Doctor’s best-loved companions such as Ian Chesterton, Vicki, and Jamie. And, yes, these are the original actors we’re talking about. As if that wasn’t enough, the production company also finds and resurrects episodes from the old Doctor Who series that were never made. So it’s not just that this is a whole new vein of Doctor Who stories that we haven’t heard before — they’re as good as canonical.

Recently, Big Finish obtained the rights to use a whole raft of much-loved Doctor Who characters, including Strax and River Song, who are both scheduled to appear in upcoming volumes. Alex Kingston, who plays River, will be appearing both as an intriguingly limited companion to McGann’s eighth Doctor and in her own series which, excitingly, is called The Diary of River Song. And, of course, as reported by Zap2it, it is believed that River will be returning for the 2015 Christmas special. If Blogtor Who is to be believed, they’ve also got the rights to the Tenth Doctor and Donna Noble. It is reported that while the new adventures have not yet been recorded, the scripts are completely written and “ready to go.”

Of course, none of this is 100 percent certain. Blogtor Who is often right about things like this, but it should be pointed out that when Big Finish was contacted about the possible return, they declined to comment. Either way, though, any fans who haven’t yet discovered the treasure trove of audio content that is Big Finish should definitely check it out.
