Bill Maher: Ahmed Mohamed ‘Did Not Invent Anything,’ Video Proves It

On Friday’s Real Time, Bill Maher said Ahmed Mohamed, a 14-year old Muslim boy who was arrested for bringing a clock in a briefcase to school, didn’t create the clock he built and showed a video to prove it.

“I hope this kid has a wonderful life and does great things. But mostly liberals — you’ll [S.E. Cupp] like this — who have glommed onto him as a mascot are ninnies. Because someone showed he did not invent anything.”

Maher played a clip of YouTube user G O’LastName putting together Mohamed’s clock in 20 seconds. The video demonstrates that all Mohamed did was take out the parts of a store-bought clock and put them in a briefcase. You can watch it below.

“He didn’t invent a clock. He took the guts out of a clock he bought in a store and put it in a pencil box! This is like pouring cheerios into a bowl and saying you invented cereal.”

Maher is right in saying Mohamed didn’t invent or create a clock. He simply put the insides of a clock in a briefcase. Mohamed proceeded to show off the contraption at his school, leading to his arrest over the briefcase’s suspicious appearance.

Yet, Mohamed continues to receive praise for the clock he put in a briefcase. Maher played a clip of Mohamed’s interview on Good Morning America in which he showed a “motherboard off an entire media player.”

“This isn’t my first invention and it won’t be my last invention,” said Mohamed proudly as held a motherboard he took out of a media player.

“It’s not an invention! Again, he took the back out of something!” Maher said when the video ended.

Maher noted how Google invited Mohamed to their annual science fair. Other attendees include a 15-year-old who invented a way to find and characterize gravitationally lensed quasars and a 16-year-old who invented an inexpensive test for the Ebola virus.

Mohamed continues to benefit from the publicity surrounding his arrest. Besides Google, Mohamed has received offers from Twitter, Reddit, MIT, NASA, and a scholarship from the New European College, reports CNN.

Progressives and conservatives alike have mixed feelings about Mohamed’s arrest. Some view his arrest as proof of islamophobia, while others say the teachers and police acted appropriately.

Maher said Mohamed didn’t deserve to be arrested but did say the clock looked strikingly similar to a bomb and that the school acted reasonably.
