As the song goes, “You’ve got to know when to hold ’em, know when to fold ’em,” and Kenny Rogers is doing just that, but not just yet. Friday morning Kenny Rogers told the Today show that he would do one final world tour and retire at the end of it.

“It’s happily sad or sadly happy,” Rogers said. “I’m going to do a big worldwide tour, and it’s going to be my last. I’m going to say goodbye at that point; I’ve done this long enough.”

Kenny was on the Today show to promote his new Christmas album, Once Again It’s Christmas, which was released on Friday. This album is his sixth Christmas album and his 36th studio album. This new album includes duets with Jennifer Nettles, (“Here It Is Christmas/Baby, It’s Cold Outside”) Alison Krauss (“Some Children See Him”), new a cappella country group Home Free (“Children, Go Where I Send Thee”), Jim Brickman and Winfield’s Locket. Roger’s last Christmas album, Christmas From The Heart, was released in 1998. All in all, with collaboration albums (Dolly Parton, Dottie West, and others), best hits and live compilations, Rogers has about 76 albums under his belt. So now the Gambler is finally foldin’ ’em!

The foremost reason the 77-year-old Rogers is retiring is because he wants to spend more time with his wife, Wanda, and their 11-year-old twin sons, Jordan and Justin. Rogers said that he wants to take his wife and children on trips that are on his bucket list, such as going to Alaska to see the salmon runs. Rogers just got back from taking his twins on an African safari. Rogers also has three other children from previous marriages.

Carson Daly and Samantha Guthrie interviewed Rogers on Today and surprised him with a plaque in honor of his achievement of selling 120 million albums. That achievement alone would prompt any singer to “know when to fold ’em.” It’s no wonder Rogers has sold that many albums, “The Gambler” singer has been in the music business for almost 60 years. Rogers is a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame and he has definitely earned it. Rogers also told the two Today hosts some news they were excited about; before Rogers “folds ’em”, his very last performance will be a live concert on the Today plaza!

If you would like to see Kenny Rogers before he “folds ’em” Taste of Country has released tour dates for Kenny’s “last hand.” And then the Gambler will walk away “when the dealin’s done.”
