Boxing fans looking for the next great American heavyweight can watch Deontay Wilder take on Frenchman Johann Duhaupas live online Saturday to see if Wilder fits the bill. Already in possession of the World Boxing Council championship belt vacated two years ago by Vitali Klitschko, the 29-year-old Wilder remains undefeated since turning pro after taking home an Olympic bronze medal in 2008.

The athletic, six-foot, seven-inch Wilder has knocked out all but one of his 34 opponents, including his first 32 in a row. Duhaupas, though he comes into the fight a relative unknown in the United States — his fight against Wilder will be his first in this country — also packs at least some punching power, with 20 KOs in his 32 wins against just two losses.

But Duhaupas has never fought outside of Europe or Russia, with most of his bouts taking place in France. But he told the media this week that he is not intimidated by fighting not only in the U.S.A., but in Wilder’s backyard of Birmingham, Alabama.

“I know that we are in his neighborhood and that puts extra pressure on the fight but either way, it’s a world championship so whether that’s in his backyard or my backyard, it doesn’t really make a difference,” the Frenchman said through a translator.

With the retirement of Floyd Mayweather, Jr., Wilder says that he expects to become not only the top American heavyweight, but the top U.S. boxer overall.

“After Floyd went out, up pops Deontay Wilder. That’s the plan,” Wilder told ESPN.com. “That’s always been the plan, and I’m making sure that that plan is played out like it’s supposed to. I am the heavyweight champion, and the heavyweights are the cream of the crop and now it’s our turn.”

Even with another knockout win by Wilder, however, the biggest fight in the heavyweight division — Wilder against Wladimir Klitschko — remains at least a year down the road.

As part of the Premier Boxing Champions series, the bout will air on NBC Sports — making the Wilder vs. Duhaupas fight the first heavyweight boxing match to air on NBC in prime time since May 20, 1985, when then-champion Larry Holmes defeated challenger Carl “The Truth” Williams.
