Kim Davis Shifts Even Further To The Right

Just when you thought Kim Davis couldn’t become any more closely aligned with religious conservatives, the Kansas county clerk has rolled out a new announcement. Kim, a longtime member of the Democratic Party, will be making the switch to the GOP.

Davis announced the decision in an interview with international news agency Reuters on Friday from Washington, D.C. Kim was in the capital because of a scheduled appearance at an event for the Family Research Council, an anti-gay marriage organization that has been qualified as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center.

“My husband and I had talked about it for quite a while and we came to the conclusion that the Democratic Party left us a long time ago, so why were we hanging on?”

Davis has become one the central faces of the marriage equality vs. religious freedom debate since she was jailed for five days earlier this month for refusing to issue county marriage licenses to gay couples. Since then, Kim has made public appearances with members of the Republican party, including presidential hopefuls Ted Cruz and Mike Huckabee — both of whom joined her as she spoke to supporters when released from jail.

However, Davis told Reuters that the likelihood of her making an active endorsement of any Republican candidate was “kind of far fetched.” Of course, the idea of her taking an opposing view to her companions shouldn’t be any surprise: Kim has been adamant about the gay friends she has who are well aware of her feelings on gay marriage.

On Thursday, the Daily Beast spoke with one such acquaintance of Davis. Gay Morehead resident Dallas Black told the publication that he finds the Kim that the world sees in the press unrecognizable to the one he calls his friend.

“I really want to believe that the kind, sweet person who was there when my mom passed away is still there. I was friends with [Davis] in the past, but I don’t know this woman I’ve been seeing… Kim Davis has become the face of Morehead, and that’s not the face we want to portray. She made us feel like our home was invaded by strangers, and she made us strangers to it.”

Kim has also been facing the possible threat of having to return to jail after it was revealed that both her name and the name of the county had been removed from marriage licenses issued by her office. That change could potentially invalidate those marriage certificates, something critics say goes against the orders of U.S. District Judge David Bunning. Davis, however, seemed ambivalent to the possibility when speaking with Reuters.

“I don’t think there should be much of an issue and the judge didn’t have any problem accepting the licenses that were issued when I was incarcerated, which had been altered, so I don’t see that there should be an issue.”

Despite all of the backlash that Kim has experienced, she has still maintained her county clerk position. While appearing on Megyn Kelly’s program earlier this week, Davis told the pundit that she sees no reason to abandon a position she rightfully earned.

“If I resign I lose my voice. Why should I have to quit a job that I love and that I’m good at? I’ve been a county employee and served the public well for over 26 years before I got elected. It comes back to, they can accommodate for all sorts of issues, and we ask for one simple accommodation and we cannot receive it.”
