Sam Smith Unveils New Theme Song For ‘Spectre’, The ‘Writing’s On The Wall’ For British Singer

Weeks after Sam Smith proudly announced that he would be singing the theme song of the newest James Bond flick, Spectre, it has finally been released. The song made its debut on Friday morning and is now available on both iTunes and Spotify, as reported by Variety.“Writing’s On The Wall” had previously premiered on U.K. radio.

This title track features the Brit’s soft mellow voice singing the ballad that totes about risking it all for love. The lyrics go, “I’ve spent a lifetime running/And I always get away/But with you I’m feeling something/That makes me want to stay.” It sounds like James Bond may be “suffocated by love.”

Just like James Bond himself, Smith is seen in the track’s official cover in a smart suit with the spotlight on him. He looks like he is ready to take on the bad guys himself. Sam had tweeted his excitement last month letting his fans know that he would be taking on this theme song for Spectre. He was clearly thrilled that he had this wonderful opportunity.

“This is one of the highlights of my career. I am honored to finally announce that I will be singing the next Bond theme song. I am so excited to be a part of this iconic British legacy and join an incredible line up of some of my biggest musical inspirations. I hope you all enjoy the song as much as I enjoyed making it.”

Sam Smith has joined the elite British lineup of singers who have taken on Bond theme songs. Madonna and Adele are in that group. However, it has been 50 years since a British male solo artist has taken on this project since Tom Jones sung “Thunderball” in 1965.

Now that people have heard “Writing’s On The Wall,” everyone is weighing in on how they like it. Even Roger Moore, who played the iconic Bond between 1973 and 1985, gave his expert opinion on the theme song.

While some listeners are not too thrilled with Sam Smith’s tune, others absolutely love it as a classic James Bond theme. According to E! News, the singer wrote the lyrics in just 20 minutes as he said that everything just flowed and it took no time at all to come up with the song.

Spectre hits theaters on November 6.
