Health Food: German McDonald’s Restaurants To Trial Organic Hamburgers

McDonald’s isn’t famous for serving up healthy diet options, but selected outlets in Germany will be offering organic hamburgers on a trial basis from October this year.

This is good news for Germans who prefer a healthier form of fast food, as from next month, selected McDonald’s restaurants in the country will be offering the “McB” and the “Long McB.”

These organic hamburgers will be the fast food chain’s first ever meal made from humanely raised beef, free of antibiotics, synthetic chemical fertilizers and pesticides and according to GMO Free USA, sourced from cows that “run free in green pastures, eating only organically-grown GMO-free feed.”

Most likely due to pressure by consumers worldwide who prefer a healthier fast food alternative, McDonald’s in Germany is dabbling with the idea of going organic.

The ingredients for the organic hamburgers will reportedly be sourced from various organic farms in Germany and Austria and will initially be offered in two variations, with consumers being asked to then vote for their favorite.

The first version of the organic hamburgers is the “McB” which contains an organic meat patty, served on dark bread, with Lollo Bionda lettuce, red onion rings, pickles, tomatoes, Edam cheese, and various sauces.

The second tasty organic option is the “Long McB,” served on a bun with sunflower seeds and containing the organic meat patty, along with rocket salad, red onion rings, tomato, Maasdam cheese and a spicy sauce.

The Mirror reports that, during the trial, the new organic hamburgers will be available at select German McDonald’s restaurants from October 1 to November 18.

However, this initial trial could lead to organic hamburgers being added to the menu of healthier options available at McDonald’s outlets in Germany, and possibly elsewhere in the world, as the fast food favorite attempts to improve its formerly greasy, and often considered unhealthy, offerings.

So far, McDonald’s has started offering healthy salads and wraps, along with the option to add apples to the popular kid’s Happy Meal. Reportedly McDonald’s has also pledged to transition to using so-called “sustainable” beef by 2016.
