Glenn Close Divorces Third Husband, Says ‘Things Are Amicable’

Actress Glenn Close reportedly divorced her third husband, David Shaw.

Page Six reports that the 68-year-old actress quietly divorced her husband of nine years, according to her rep. An inside source apparently opened up about how the couple broke the news to their friends.

“Glenn and David have been telling friends over the summer they are divorcing, and he’ll remain living in Maine while Glenn moves back to New York full-time. They’ve been separated for some time, and things are amicable between them.”

The insider further claims that Glenn Close plans to focus on her career now that her third marriage is over.

In a July 2007 interview with Good Housekeeping, the Guardians of the Galaxy actress opened up about her husband, a biotechnology entrepreneur with three adult children of his own.

“He’s one of the most creative people I’ve ever met. He’s a brilliant man, very much a man’s man — he’s incredibly athletic.”

The fact that Glenn Close decided to get married again in the first place was a big shock to many people, especially after she talked so badly about the matrimonial bond after the ending of her second marriage.

During a December 1987 interview with People, Glenn compared herself to an amoeba in her first two marriages.

“Too many women define themselves in terms of a man. Look at me. In my marriages, I was like an amoeba… Men blossoms under the nurturing of a good woman, while women don’t often get that benefit from a man. I think of men and women as two different species. Katherine Hepburn said they should live next door and visit each other once in a while. Not a bad idea.”

At the time of that interview, she was pregnant with her now 19-year-old daughter, a child she conceived with producer John Starke.

According to Page Six, Glenn Close also shared her strong feelings about marriage overall nearly four years later in 1991.

“I don’t particularly think marriage is a natural state. Men and women are so vastly different… Why put more pressure on by binding yourself to someone?”

The former Damages star was married to her first husband, songwriter Cabot Wade, from 1969 to 1971. She was married to her second husband, businessman James Marlas, from 1984 to 1987. Therefore, Glenn Close’s marriage to David Shaw lasted longer than her first two marriages combined.
