McDonald’s Employee Helps Disabled Elderly Man Cut And Eat His Food — Worker’s Act Of Kindness Goes Viral [Photo]

A McDonald’s worker is receiving praise from thousands online after a photo was uploaded to Facebook capturing the moment he closed his cash register during rush hour at a McDonald’s fast food outlet to help a disabled man cut and eat his meal.

The McDonald’s employee has become an online hero, with thousands of Facebook users praising his display of compassion and humanity.

Facebook user Destiny Carreno said she stopped after work at a McDonald’s in Union State, Chicago, Illinois, on September 16, and as she waited in line to order her meal, she saw an elderly man on a wheelchair who had just ordered a meal asking the cashier for help.

The elderly man, who needed assistance to cut his food and eat, said feebly, “Help me please.”

He spoke so quietly that it took Carreno and the cashier some effort to understand that the man was asking for help. And even after they understood that he needed help, they had to listen carefully and guess before they were able to determine what help he needed.

Carreno said the cashier made a few guesses before he realized that the elderly man needed help cutting and eating his meal.

At first, Carreno thought the cashier would refuse to leave his cash register during rush hour at the McDonald’s restaurant in downtown Chicago. But she was moved close to tears when he left the till and went into the kitchen to wash his hands. He put on a pair of gloves, went to the disabled man’s table, and assisted him by cutting his food and helping him to eat.

Carreno was touched by the employee’s humanitarian gesture, partly because she has a quadriplegic uncle, and she guessed the elderly man at the McDonald’s outlet suffered from the same condition.

“At that point, the tears started to gather in my eyes. My heart was so appreciative for what he did. I couldn’t contain my emotions in the crowded restaurant.”

Carreno managed to snap a picture of the McDonald’s worker, identified simply as Kenny, helping the elderly man eat his food. She uploaded the photo to Facebook on Wednesday, September 23, and it went viral immediately and has been shared hundreds of thousands of times.

Carreno wrote on Facebook, “As I waited in line to order at McDonald’s, an elderly handicapped gentleman wheeled himself over to the cashier in front of me. From what I saw, the gentleman may have had a case of quadriplegia, the same medical condition my uncle has.”

“The man politely tried to ask the cashier something and it took him a few tries before either of us could understand he was saying ‘Help me please.’

Neither of us knew what help he needed, and the cashier suggested a few things before he figured out the gentleman needed help cutting and eating his meal.

To be honest, I thought the cashier wasn’t going to help, especially during rush hour in downtown Chicago, but to my shock, he shut down his register and disappeared from view — not to get away from helping him, but to wash his hands and put gloves on!”

The cashier came out from the kitchen, sat down, and began cutting the man’s meal and helped him eat.

At that point, the tears started to gather in my eyes. My heart was so appreciative for what he did. I couldn’t contain my emotions in the crowded restaurant.

This employee, who put everything on hold for this man, went above and beyond his responsibilities to help this handicapped customer out. That was the kindest and most humble thing I had ever seen.”

The reaction of Facebook users to Kenny’s exemplary display of humanity has been unanimously positive.

Facebook user Yolanda Garay-Beaudion commented, “you have me in tears here!”

“I would even write to McDonald’s about that. That employee deserves to be recognized…,” Eva Cristine Aguirre-Beck wrote.

“That’s amazing,” Liz Viera wrote, “made me tear up!”

“My heart melts for this. I would’ve done the same thing for him. God bless his heart,” Nilsa Martinez exclaimed.
