Edward Snowden: Fermi Paradox, Or The Lack Of Real UFO Sightings And Alien Life In Space, Explained By Encryption

Edward Snowden has an interesting explanation for the Fermi paradox, which asks why we have not seen any real UFO sightings or communicated with alien life in space. Snowden believes it is possible that encryption is the answer to the cosmological puzzle, and we simply cannot understand what aliens are saying since any communication may appear like noise.

In a related report by the Inquisitr, the upcoming Snowden movie had actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt secretly meeting with the NSA whistleblower in order to prepare for the biopic role.

Fermi’s Paradox was created by physicists Enrico Fermi and Michael Hart, who noted the apparent contradiction between probability estimates for alien life in space and the lack of evidence for any such alien civilizations. Based upon these arguments, it’s possible that many aliens should have invented interstellar travel, and thus UFO sightings on Earth should not be limited to conspiracy theorists.

Astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson brought this subject up during his StarTalk podcast with Edward Snowden, and it was noted that even if there is alien life in space, they should be using encryption to secure their long range communications. If this is the case, it is likely the alien signals are so well encrypted that they resemble background noise.

“When you look at encrypted communications, if they are properly encrypted, there is no real way to tell that they are encrypted. You can’t distinguish a properly encrypted communication, at least in the theoretical sense, from random noise,” says Snowden. “So if you have an alien civilization trying to listen for other civilizations, or our civilization trying to listen for aliens, there’s only one small period in the development of their society where all of their communications will be sent via the most primitive and most unprotected means.”

In response, Tyson points out that we’re “assuming they have the same security issues we have here on Earth.” But Snowden believes that any intelligent species would use encryption by default, and it’s possible we have already heard from alien life in space, yet not realized it.

“When we think about everything we’re hearing from our satellites, or everything they’re hearing from our civilization, if there are indeed aliens out there, all of their communications are encrypted by default. So what we’re hearing — which is actually an alien television show or a phone call or a message between their planet and their own GPS constellation, whatever it happens to be — is indistinguishable to us from cosmic microwave background radiation.”
