Future’s ‘Honest’ About Dealing With Shyness — Gives Sound Advice

Rapper Future talks about how he had to let go of other people’s thoughts about him. He’s no longer shy for a reason. And his advice is for those who battle with the same complexes.

In an interview with XXL, Future holds nothing back about his old self and reveals newly formed thoughts. Shyness might have even inspired his 2014 studio album, Honest. In the cover story, Future states as follows.

“It’s very much true because I was shy talking about certain things and I was shy with being honest because I didn’t want people to judge me talking about fatherhood and how somebody should have my child around me. It scared me because I know there’s millions of people who are going to have probably a different outlook on it or come at me a different way, but I gotta be like, ‘F**k what they think.'”

“If people is going to like you, they going to like you. There’s people that’s not going to like you so much, they probably don’t know anything about you. How you going to focus on somebody that don’t even know a thing about you? They going to have their opinions and you just got to live life for you.”

Like Future, several people deal with different forms of social anxiety. It’s mostly psychological perspective. The American Psychological Association defines shyness — also known as “diffidence” — as “the tendency to feel awkward, worried or tense during social encounters, especially with unfamiliar people.”

But Future goes on stage and rocks the house during his shows, right? How could he have been shy at all? Well, according to clinical psychologist Renée Gilbert, Ph.D, it’s very possible. Via her Shake Your Shyness site, she states as follows.

“Because shyness can affect one area of our life and not others, it’s possible for shy people to appear outgoing to people looking in from the outside. Most of you have heard of actors who go on stage and deliver a brilliant performance, but are shy and timid in their real life. Some of you will be able to relate because you’re able to be more outgoing at work than you are in your personal life. But why?”

“The answer is simple. When we’re at work, we’re given a role to play…that role legitimizes us in our own eyes and the eyes of others. We’re not calling ourselves, we’re calling on behalf of our company. If we’re rejected, the company takes part of the fall. But when we call on our own behalf, whatever rejection may follow is far more personal.”

With some things in life, you just have to let go and not worry. It’s seemingly evident that Future is no longer catering to people who add no value to his life. Take “Where Ya At,” for example. If you’re always concerned with the thoughts of others, it’s difficult to dismiss life-suckers and opportunists from your inner-circle, especially if you don’t like hurting people’s feelings.

Every once in a while, you have to re-evaluate who is really on your side and who’s just there “because.”
