‘Angry Birds’ Trailer: Birds Take Anger Management Classes?

The first official trailer for The Angry Birds Movie was released online Wednesday.

Sony Pictures Entertainment released the 2.5 minute clip on its official YouTube channel, and it was quickly shared by numerous media outlets online.

For months, fans of the popular Angry Birds mobile game may have wondered exactly how it would be turned into a full-length animated film.

With the release of the first trailer, Sony Pictures made it perfectly clear that The Angry Birds Movie would simply expand on the core theme of the popular game — birds with anger issues. ScreenCrush reports that the official synopsis of the film takes that underlying theme even farther by allowing these short-tempered birds to essentially become heroes that may be called to save the day.

“The movie takes us to an island populated entirely by happy, flightless birds – or almost entirely. In this paradise, Red (Jason Sudeikis), a bird with a temper problem, speedy Chuck (Josh Gad), and the volatile Bomb (Danny McBride) have always been outsiders. But when the island is visited by mysterious green piggies, it’s up to these unlikely outcasts to figure out what the pigs are up to.”

As seen in the trailer, Bill Hader, another Saturday Night Live alum, joins the cast as Leonard — one of those mysterious green piggies that arrive on the island unexpectedly. The responses and reactions to The Angry Birds Movie trailer shared via Twitter since its release have been mixed.

With an estimated budget of $80 million (USD), according to the Helsinki Times, The Angry Birds movie is scheduled to fly into theaters next summer.

Its original release date was July 1, 2016 — a date which would have placed The Angry Birds Movie in direct competition against The BFG and Tarzan.

However, according to IGN, Sony Pictures decided to move the release date ahead to May 20, 2016 instead. Therefore, within the next eight months, fans and critics of the overall Angry Birds franchise will get a chance to see the full film on the big screen.
