iPhone 6S Foreshadows Death Of The Home Button: To Lose It Or Not To Lose It

Is the iPhone 6S urging us to say goodbye to the iPhone home button soon? Tech critics and analysts are divided.

In a couple of days, the iPhone 6S is shipping to the market finally, albeit with some delays in some areas due to the pope’s visit. But as we say hello to one of the most advanced and ground-breaking features that the iPhone 6S will bring, known as 3D Touch, are we also saying goodbye to the revolutionary one-button Home introduced by the iPhone in 2007?

CNet argues that with the groundbreaking features of the iPhone 6S when it comes to its pressure-sensitive touchscreen and the greatly-improved responsiveness of iPhone voice assistant Siri, the iPhone 6S might actually be starting to prep the market for the possibility that the future iPhone models will one day finally lose the Home button.

Why lose the Home button if it’s so reliable? Latinos Post writes that as other aspects of the iPhone evolve, the need for the Home button becomes lesser and lesser, and the end of the iPhone home button might actually spark new possibilities for the successors of the iPhone 6S. But as the end of the home button on the iPhone starts opportunities, it will also — most certainly — start controversies.

Sleeker Design, Bigger Display

Losing the Home button for the iPhone 6S successors could give the iPhone its much-needed boost in terms of design. As Apple has always aimed for minimalism and clean design, a full HD-display screen will provide a more handsome look for the iPhone.

iPhone Design Vis-à-Vis Android Phones

A couple of the newer Android phones, such as the LG G4, HTC One M9, and the Sony Experia Z4, all lost their physical home buttons, going for the almost bezel-free design. And while this gave these Android phones leeway on design and screen size, it has also become a hassle for users who prefer to have a backup plan when their screens freeze. While the iPhone 6S continues to have its reliable Home button in these unforeseen cases, the possibility that the successors to the iPhone 6S will finally lose this handy-dandy button is quite a radical shift.

The iPhone Legacy

The iPhone design jumpstarted the one-button design, which a lot of smartphones tried to emulate or transcend. The iPhone 6S successors losing this trademark will mean a great shift in the iPhone brand, something that Apple should think about. When it comes to innovation, Apple certainly isn’t one to hold back, but then again, will it be for the better?

Whatever Apple decides to do with the iPhone 7, the iPhone 7S, or even the countless of iPhones to follow, we’re pretty sure everyone would still grab the iPhone, home button-less or not.

iPhone 6S will be available on the market Friday, September 25.
