‘Fear The Walking Dead’: Did Carl Leave The House Again And Wander Into The Wrong ‘Walking Dead’ Universe?

For eagle-eyed viewers during last night’s episode of AMC’s Fear The Walking Dead, there was a particularly juicy Easter egg. In fact, some questioned if it was a crossover moment from The Walking Dead rather than an Easter egg. Missed it? Take a look.

Warning: This article contains spoilers about AMC’s Fear The Walking Dead and the companion series it is based on, The Walking Dead. If you have not yet viewed all available episodes, please proceed with caution.

While Chris Manawa (played by Lorenzo James Henrie) was doing his monologue from the roof of Madison Clark’s (Kim Dickens) house about the nine days Fear fans missed between Episode 3 (entitled “The Dog”) and last night’s episode (Episode 4, “Not Fade Away”) a familiar face appeared to turn up around the three minute mark in Fear The Walking Dead.

Carl in Fear The Walking Dead Episode 4 Not Fade Away 2

That boy in the plaid shirt looks suspiciously like Carl Grimes (Chandler Riggs), the boy who is notoriously bad at staying in the house in The Walking Dead. Could it actually be Carl?

As Heavy points out, and I certainly agree, it most likely wasn’t Carl Grimes from The Walking Dead. After all, Fear The Walking Dead takes place during the time his father, Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln), was in a coma in the hospital. At this stage of The Walking Dead, Carl didn’t even have a house to stay in, let alone disappear from. Plus, during the Fear timeline, Carl looked more like the following photo.

In fact, Carl didn’t even have his dad’s signature hat to call his own at this stage in the game. He and his mother were holed up in a tent city while Shane (Jon Bernthal) waited for the world to be fixed. Kind of like Travis Manawa (Cliff Curtis) is currently doing in Fear.

As well as this obvious time frame issue, the fact that both shows are quite literally a world away from each other distance-wise is another reason it isn’t Carl. Even if it was, and he was this age in this time frame, it would be impossible for him to travel the distance from Georgia to L.A. in a reasonable amount of time considering the roadblocks and fuel issues we see all the time in The Walking Dead. Even at the start of the outbreak, like in Fear’s current time frame, it would still be a challenge to drive through military points judging on how the National Guard are already securing things in L.A.

However, considering how similar the Fear extra looks to Carl Grimes in Season 5 of The Walking Dead, it is possible AMC thought it would be an excellent Easter egg for Walking Dead fans. Something for fans to see in the blink of an eye and wonder if it was Carl or not, then go back and watch the episode again to see if it was.

Or, perhaps it was Carl, taking a fancy to Alicia Clark (Alycia Debnam-Carey) — another character who also has issues with staying in the house.

Fear The Walking Dead returns to AMC with Episode 5 (“Cobalt”) on Sunday, September 27.
