Ernie Els Apologizes Over Swear-Filled Rant

Ernie Els has apologized after unleashing a foul-mouthed rant over the watering of Wentworth golf course during the PGA Championship.

The 6’1″ South African golfer, who was involved in a 2010 redesign of the lay-out of the course, let rip on Saturday following his third round, criticizing the Wentworth greens staff and the European Tour for the state of the greens on the course. Despite actually scoring a 2-under-par 70, Krankypants Els stormed off at the end of his round to bark the following into the nearest microphone:

“Really, I am pissed off. Conditions are tough and it has been blowing all night and this morning. I’ve asked them to put water on the bloody greens and then I spoke to JP [chief referee John Paramor] coming up the 15th and he said we did water [the course] last night. I said ‘you have to triple that’. You have a damn 30mph easterly breeze blowing so put [expletive] water on the greens. You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to figure that out. So now we have another situation and the guys aren’t going to be very happy.”

However, the three-time major winner has now apologized for his expletive-laden tirade and made a donation to the European Tour charity. George O’Grady, chief executive of the European Tour, said in a statement issued on Sunday:

“Ernie Els asked to see me this morning and apologised for his intemperate language following the conclusion of his round yesterday. He stated that he had already apologised to the individuals concerned and offered a substantial donation to the European Tour Benevolent Trust, which I accepted. The European Tour now consider this matter closed.”

Els is nicknamed ‘The Big Easy,’ though this is due to his fluid, easygoing swing action – not his temperament.
