Lisa Kudrow On ‘Conan’: The Similarities Between Herself And Phoebe Buffay

Lisa Kudrow played the well-loved Phoebe Buffay on the 1990s sitcom Friends, but in a recent interview on Conan, Kudrow reveals she is nothing like Phoebe. In fact, she went so far as to say that she is the exact opposite of Phoebe. She doesn’t like going on trips or doing anything close to dangerous. As the Daily Mail reported, Conan asked if she is the adventurous type and she said she is not.

Learning that Lisa Kudrow is nothing like her on-screen persona, Phoebe, might not seem that surprising, but what about Phoebe’s on-screen relationship with Friends character Joey Tribbiani, played by her good friend Matt LeBlanc? Why didn’t they ever get together? Matt LeBlanc and Lisa Kudrow were recently interviewed by People and were asked this very question. Matt replied that he and Lisa wondered the same thing and that they even pitched the idea to the show’s producers.

“Towards the end we actually pitched the idea that Joey and Phoebe had been having casual sex the entire time. We’d go back and shoot all the historical scenes and just before a moment that everyone recognizes, there’s Joey and Phoebe coming out of a broom closet together. But they were like, ‘Nah.'”

Conan also brought up with Lisa Kudrow the rumors about a potential Friends reunion. At one time there was such a convincing graphic posted by someone (Matthew Perry even tweeted about it), that Lisa Kudrow actually thought there was one planned and that she hadn’t been asked to be in it!

Lisa Kudrow might think she’s not adventurous, but she definitely is, at least in some ways. She recently got on stage with Taylor Swift and did a rendition of the song “Smelly Cat,” the song she made famous on Friends. That was one Taylor Swift show any Lisa Kudrow or Friends fan would not want to miss.

Her time on Friends earned Lisa Kudrow an Emmy for her portrayal of Phoebe and she has also won an American Comedy Award. On the small screen, in her current sitcom The Comeback, Lisa Kudrow’s character, Valerie Cherish, wins an Emmy. Clearly Lisa Kudrow is Emmy-worthy even when she is playing someone other than herself!

Will Lisa Kudrow pull off a real-life Emmy for her portrayal of Valerie? She has some pretty stiff competition with Julia Louis-Dreyfus for Veep, Amy Schumer for Inside Amy Schumer, and Amy Poehler for Parks And Recreation, so only time will tell. One thing we do know for sure is that Lisa Kudrow will always be one of our faves.
