Zooey Deschanel Takes Maternity Leave, Megan Fox Becomes ‘New Girl’ In The Loft
Zooey Deschanel won’t be returning to the new season of New Girl. Instead, Megan Fox will be renting out Zooey’s character Jess’ loft. Fans of New Girl, don’t worry — Zooey isn’t leaving permanently. Zooey is just taking time off to spend with her new baby, so on the show Jess will be “sequestered during jury duty” and will be absent from the loft. Megan’s character Reagan is a pharmaceutical rep who moves into the loft in Jess’ absence to help Nick and the guys pay the rent. Megan won’t appear in the series until the sixth episode of New Girl, which is being released mid-season in January.
Zooey and new husband, Jacob Pechenik, welcomed the arrival of their daughter just last month, and Deschanel is currently on maternity leave from the show. Zooey will appear in a few scenes of the first few episodes because they were filmed before she took her leave, but then Jess will only be “seen” through court-room sketches during her jury sequestration. The creator and executive producer of New Girl, Liz Meriwether, seems happy that Fox will be joining the cast. “It’s insane to me that such a gorgeous person can be so funny, but I guess we just all have to accept it,” Meriwether said.
‘I’ve been a fan of her comedic skills since This Is 40, and I’m so excited to have her on the show. We had Megan in mind when we wrote this part – she’s the perfect person to come in and shake these guys up.’
Max Greenfield, who plays Schmidt on New Girl, also seems happy and tweeted about his new “roommate.”

Zooey will definitely be missed from the show, but it is understandable that she takes some time to bond with her new baby. What does Zooey think about Megan “replacing her” on the show?
