Dog Stands Guard Over Trapped Friend For One Week: Heroic Dog Watches Guard Over Pal Stuck In Ravine Until Rescued

A dog stood guard over her trapped friend that got stuck in a ravine after they ran off from home. The heartwarming story reveals that the dog watched over her pal for one whole week until they were both rescued.

The incident occurred in Vashon, Washington, when Tillie refused to leave Phoebe’s side after she fell into a ravine. ABC News reports via Yahoo News that the dogs escaped their home after the front door was left slightly open on September 7.

B.J. Duft, the owner of the two strayed dogs, was hosting a party on the day that his canines took off. A lot of activity was going on and Tillie and Phoebe had a chance to go exploring on their own.

“Tillie would never leave even if the gate was left open, but she’s best friends with Phoebe, and so when Phoebe follows her little Basset Hound nose, Tillie always goes with her to make sure she’s OK. They’re best pals — inseparable.”

Tille is an 11-year-old Irish Settler/Spaniel mix that Duft has had since she was a puppy. Phoebe is four and was adopted two years ago after she and Tillie became fast friends at a doggie daycare.

Amy Carey of nonprofit pet rescue Vashon Island Pet Protectors received a call from someone who said he spotted the dog on his property attempting to approach him before retreating down a trail that led to a ravine behind his home.

Carey said, “It turned out the the dog was Tillie trying to get help for Phoebe, who had gotten stuck. [sic]”

When Carey got word of this, she investigated the situation further and saw Phoebe stuck in a cistern down the ravine. It was then she saw Tillie standing guard over her pal.

“It was very clear what Tillie had done,” Carey shares. “She had not left her friend’s side except for going up to the man’s house when he was there to try and get help for Phoebe.”

Carey called Duft and gave him the good news about finding his dogs. She said there was “a lot of tears and hugs” when they were reunited.

Duft was relieved to find his dogs — and not surprised that Tillie was so protective of Phoebe.

“I was thrilled. I was absolutely not surprised to learn that Tillie had stood by her side the whole time. She’s a very caring, loving and nurturing dog and the two of them are best friends.”

Other than being hungry and exhausted, Tillie and Phoebe were in good health. They had a huge “hamburger dinner” when they got home.

Duft has ordered a GPS dog collar and says that he “never wants to lose them again.”

This is one of those feel good news stories that make your day. Loyalty and genuine friendship shined through when this dog stood guard over her best friend.
