‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Season 12 Is Letting The Sunshine In, Promises A Big Change In New Promo [Video]
The upcoming season of Grey’s Anatomy promises to let the sunshine in. In the new promo poster, it’s just Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) for the first time in the 12 years that the show has been on the air.
In the promo, she’s holding an umbrella to suggest that she’s still not over the death of her husband Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey). That said, it seems like the 12th season of Grey’s Anatomy is going to set a “lighter” tone, which is a huge change from the last few years. Instead of feeling the loss of a main character in a dark way, it looks like Meredith will have a lighter time discovering who she is as a single mom.
As it is, Grey’s Anatomy flashed forward a year after Derek’s death last season, so we didn’t really get to see Meredith mourn her husband in a way that satisfied most fans. Instead of placating fans, creator Shonda Rhimes has decided to let Meredith explore her single side in a fun way. The new promo for the upcoming season just hit the internet, and as promised, it looks like it’s going to be very different.

While we see Meredith waking up alone in bed, the other scenes in the promo are “fun” and “happy” in the hospital, which suggests that Meredith is going to energetically throw herself into work.
When TV Line spoke with Shonda Rhimes, she said the upcoming season will be “lighter.”
“Meredith is single and she is living this life that she’s never thought she’d be living again. That evolution… is beautiful.”
As for Ellen Pompeo, she spoke to the Hollywood Reporter about the overall tone of the show.
“It feels a lot different. Every time we lose someone big — when we lost Sandra Oh — when we lost anybody — it’s a big shift. But a show that runs this long, you welcome those big changes.”
She continued, “It makes everything feel so much different and that’s what we’re looking for in season 12. We’re looking for things to not stay the same. They have to stay the same to some extent but you welcome change because that’s what inspires the writers, that’s what inspires the actors. Change is necessary for growth.”
