U.S. Citizen Alleges Rape: 46-Year-Old Tourist Says She Was Drugged, Gang Raped In India

India, which is still reeling after a series of rape incidents most recently, the Saudi diplomat rape case now has yet another rape case to worry about. According to the International Business Times, an American woman on a trip to India has alleged rape against two unidentified men. The woman has filed a complaint against two men in the northern Indian city of Dharamshala, located in Himachal Pradesh.

The woman, a 46-year-old U.S. Citizen on her maiden trip to India, alleged that she was drugged and then gang raped by the men. She was on a trip to Dharamshala, which is a popular tourist spot located more than 300 kilometers (186 miles) from the country’s capital city, New Delhi. She had arrived at Dharamshala after visiting other popular destinations in northern India, including Kullu and Manali.

She said she was attacked, drugged, and later gang raped by two unidentified men.

“I had gone to shop at a market on September 14 when two people attacked me from behind,” the 46-year-old tourist told the Times of India, a local newspaper.

Local police officials have already launched an investigation into the rape incident and have added that they expect to nab the culprits soon.

“Spot inspection and medical examination of complainant has been done. The matter is being investigated,” Renu Sharma, a senior police official told Asian News International.

The identity of the U.S. citizen has not been revealed, but she is a resident of California, initial reports say.

India has been witness to several high profile rape cases recently. In 2015 alone, there were multiple reports of attacks and sexual assault cases on foreign women. This has badly hurt the tourism sector in India. Recently, a 51-year-old woman was allegedly raped in new Delhi, the country’s capital. In February, another woman, this time a 20-year-old Japanese woman, was raped by her tourist guide in the city of Jaipur.

Rape cases in India rose to prominence after the infamous 2012 Nirbhaya rape case, after which a series of protests rocked the country. The Nirbhaya rape incident involved several men who raped and killed a young student inside a moving bus in the bustling city of New Delhi. All the accused in that case were, however, sentenced — with one of the accused committing suicide while in jail.

Last year, the Inquisitr had also reported about another rape case in which two sisters were allegedly gang raped, murdered, and hanged from a tree in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.
