Deadpool, X-Men, Gambit: Is Marvel Planning A Crossover Movie?

Marvel has dropped a huge hint that they may be planning a crossover movie with some of their favorite superheroes. Deadpool and X-Men: Apocalypse will hit screens in 2016, but they might be back sooner rather than later…and joined by one of Marvel’s most loved characters, Gambit.

With Deadpool providing an adult edge to the superhero genre,in the form of a hilarious Ryan Reynolds, and the X-Men franchise going from strength to strength with prequels, sequels, and everything in between, Gambit is currently in production with Channing Tatum planned to play the card-tossing super mutant.

However, Marvel have other ideas in the pipeline.

MTV held an interview with producer Simon Kinberg this week, and he dropped a solid hint that all of the characters could appear in a potential crossover movie at some point in the future.

“The idea is that we’ve sort of reset the timeline after Days Of Future Past in some ways and if not erased, certainly allowed for change from X1, 2, 3. Everything from Days Of Future Past forward, 1973, everything we set now becomes canon.”

“So the Gambit movie, the Deadpool movie, will exist in a world that acknowledges whatever happened in Days Of Future Past and moving forward. Doesn’t mean they’ll always interact with those characters, obviously, it’s not like every movie has all the characters, but they all have to exist within the same rules. There will be interplay between different characters in different movies.”

Despite this, Kinberg also admits he has trouble remembering the X-Men timeline.

“I don’t have it up on a wall, but I have it on my computer, and I have it sort of tattooed on my brain now too. Nothing external, so that if I get knocked over the head, no one can read it. It’s literally behind my eyelids. But yeah, we have a clear sense of the directions we want to take them in and in my mind at least, how we could start to cross-pollinate sort of with those characters that have their standalone movies.”

So, excellent news for fans and a potentially wise move by Marvel, but it wouldn’t be the first time their characters have crossed over. As Cinema Blend reminds us, Gambit already made a fleeting appearance in another spin-off movie, X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Colossus, who appeared in the first three X-Men movies, will appear in Deadpool next year, and The Avengers – which featured Captain America, Iron Man, The Hulk, and Thor – made $1.52 billion at the box office, and is possibly the most successful crossover in movie history.

With this in mind, the R rated Deadpool is the first of three potential crossover movies, opening in the U.K. on February 5, 2016. X-Men: Apocalypse follows suit on May 19, 2015 and later in the year, Channing Tatum will bring Gambit to the big screen on October 7, 2016.
