Emily Blunt: Becoming An American Citizen Was A ‘Terrible Mistake’

British born actress Emily Blunt has indicated that she believes becoming an American citizen was a terrible mistake. Blunt, who was born in London England, became a naturalized U.S. citizen just last month and made the controversial comments after watching the Republican presidential debate last month. The 32-year-old Sicario, star has enraged conservatives with her comments.

The Washington Post reports that Blunt made her comments when she was interviewed during a “red carpet” event promoting her new movie. A reporter from Hollywood Reporter asked Blunt about her views on Donald Trump. Blunt has outraged many with her reply.

“I became an American citizen recently, and that night, we watched the Republican debate, and I thought, ‘This was a terrible mistake. What have I done?'”

According to the Telegraph Blunt was referring to the debate in which Donald Trump was called out by a moderator over his having called women “pigs” and “fat slobs.” Blunt also made comments saying that she had mixed feelings about becoming an American citizen when she appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live.

On that occasion Blunt said that she wasn’t “entirely thrilled” about her citizenship and said that “it was sad.” Blunt indicated that she was especially sad to be made to publicly renounce her allegiance to Queen Elizabeth.

“I had to renounce my Queen! But it’s kind of typically American. I had to renounce her in the room but I don’t actually technically renounce her. They were like, ‘just say it, you don’t have to mean it but just say it.'”

Blunt’s comments have not gone down well with conservatives and comments by Fox and Friends host Anna Kooiman typifies the thoughts of many.

“Well you know what, then why don’t you leave Hollywood, California, and let some American women take on the roles that you’re getting. Because Americans are watching your movies and lining your pockets.”

Fox 411 reports that social media was quick to set Blunt in the firing line for her comments. Radio show host Wayne Dupree summed up the feeling of many when he suggested that Blunt would be welcome to renounce her U.S. citizenship.

Some Twitter users were more understanding of Blunts comments saying that her regret has to do with the possibility of Trump winning the presidency rather than any anti-American feelings.

Blunt is married to American actor John Krasinski, best know for his role in The Office.
