Caitlyn Jenner Says Goodbye To Bruce Forever, Files Paperwork To Officially Change Her Name And Gender

Caitlyn Jenner is making it official.

The transgender icon filed legal documents this week to officially change her name and sex in the eyes of the state. Jenner filed the documents in Los Angeles on Tuesday, though, as TMZ reported, she left out some details. Caitlyn Jenner omitted information about her medical history, saying it will feed into some of the threats she has already received.

The step, though largely procedural, is an important one for Caitlyn Jenner’s transition to live as a woman. Since opening up to Vanity Fair earlier this year about her new identity, Caitlyn has been open about her desire to put Bruce in the past. She said it has been difficult revealing herself to the world as a woman, though not as hard as it was living a lie as Bruce Jenner.

The transition has been difficult for Caitlyn’s family as well, especially as it has played out before television audiences.

“There was a hard time for the entire family, that we were all transitioning with her, but in front of an audience,” Caitlyn’s step-daughter Khloe told People magazine. “That’s not really the normal way to go about it.”

She added, “There is a lot of raw emotions, that it’s hard to do in front of a camera. For us, we were trying to be really open and raw with it, I think. We all got through it and that’s completely over, it’s all behind us now. So, we are just happy for her. We just want her to be happy. But there was definitely a moment that was really tough for all of us.”

As Caitlyn Jenner has been transitioning, she has also been evolving. Always open about her conservative beliefs — Bruce Jenner spoke often about being a proud Republican — now Caitlyn Jenner said she has changed course on one important issue.

On an appearance on Ellen, Jenner said she no longer opposes gay marriage.

“I want to help each of you understand something that I only recently embraced: Being different is okay – in fact, it’s great! But I also understand it takes some getting used to. Like many people, there was a time when I didn’t realize how important it is for gay couples to have the right to get married. But after hearing from my gay friends and learning more about the hardships they faced because of discrimination, it became clear to me that everyone should be able to marry the person they love.”

It is not clear when Caitlyn Jenner will have her name and gender change completed.
