Julia Roberts Goes Makeup Free In Striking Stand Against Beauty Industry

Julia Roberts has been well known as our “pretty woman” ever since she starred in the movie of the same name in 1990. Since then, she has gone on to capture our hearts in a number of incredible roles, not the least of which was her Academy Award-winning performance in Erin Brockovich in 2000. She is perhaps most well-known for her incredible smile, one that lights up every room she enters.

As reported by Mirror, on Friday, September 11, Julia Roberts attended Ricardo Tisci’s Givenchy fashion show in New York. Chosen as Givenchy’s new face, Tisci hand-picked Roberts, calling her a “generational icon of beauty and elegance.” And who wouldn’t agree with that statement? At the age of 47, Julia Roberts attended the high-profile fashion show and had the ability to make a black blazer, black pants, and a T-shirt sporting a graphic image of Tisci’s face look like sheer elegance.

But there’s another side to Julia Roberts, the side that knows that despite the glitz and glamour that require full-on makeup and a flawless look, real beauty goes far deeper. The Huffington Post reveals that Julia Roberts feels so strongly about loving ourselves for what we are that she did what was perhaps a brave thing for someone employed by the film industry.

She posted a makeup-free photo of herself on Instagram.

Along with her daring photo, Julia Roberts quoted the lyrics of Beyonce’s famous song.

“Perfection is a disease of a nation.”

She went on to talk about how women try everything under the sun to be that perfect size and have that perfect face.

“We overlay our faces with tons of make-up. We get botoxs and even starve ourselves to become that perfect size.”

Her message? It’s not about any of that; it’s about loving yourself for who you are.

The makeup-free photo has caused a stir across the media industry, and its reception has been a positive one.

Tweets like the above from Yahoo! have spread like wildfire, helping spread Julia Roberts’ message that we have to look beyond the wrinkles and the lines.

“You have to be happy with yourself. It doesn’t matter what you look like on the outside, it’s what’s on the inside that counts.”

Kudos to Julia Roberts for bringing the message home in such a classy way and for bringing women around the world one step closer to accepting themselves for who they are.
