Pit Bull Attack In New York Gets Owner Arrested: Could This Upset Animal Rights? [Video]

A pit bull attack in New York sent a man to the hospital and earned the dog’s owner an arrest. It doesn’t look good for those defending pit bulls as a non-threatening and loving pet.

The Georgia Senate has passed a law this year stating that no dog is inherently lethal, including pit bulls, according to WABE. Senator Ellis Black has said that cities and counties can still regulate vicious dogs, as long as individual breeds are not mentioned.

“You can find vicious dogs among just about every breed, and no one particular breed is exempt from having dogs that have good dispositions and very faithful companions, and it would be unjust to condemn these dogs just simply because of their genetics.”

Many animal lovers have agreed that pit bulls can be kind, gentle companions which wouldn’t harm anyone. Unfortunately for 55-year-old Cynthia Oliver, her pets have proven to be a menace. In the following video, which contains graphic imagery, the pit bulls attacked an older man, pulling her along as she was helpless to stop them.

According to People Magazine, Oliver was arrested at the scene for reckless endangerment and five counts of assault. The dogs had mauled the unidentified 62-year-old male, severing his right ear, and leaving bites of various ferocity on his arms, legs, and chest.

Anthony Bove, the son of the victim, told CNN that his father had been walking to church when he was attacked. Though the police had said Oliver dropped the leash after a conversation, Bove countered the statement. Bove said that there was no conversation, but as the video suggests, the dogs were beyond Cynthia Oliver’s control.

It took a few helpful witnesses to wrestle the dogs away from the victim as he lay on the street in his own blood after the pit bull attack. One of those helpful witnesses was attacked, as well, but it doesn’t appear that the witness had sustained any serious injury.

This incident could be a step backwards for pit bull owners who have been trying to stop government regulation and banning of the dogs. It is unknown if the victim had provoked the attack in any way.

Anthony Bove’s father has had his ear reconstructed and is reportedly in stable condition, while Oliver’s dogs are in custody. Oliver herself has been arrested and placed on $35,000 bond following the pit bull attack.

Could this incident lead to a new attack on animal rights and the freedom of pit bulls and other potentially vicious dogs?
