WWE News: Backstage News On Why Sting Wrestled On ‘RAW’ — Is He Now Set To Win WWE Title At ‘Night Of Champions’?

The RAW ratings over the last couple of weeks have been completely abysmal, and with return of NFL football on Monday nights, WWE wanted to do everything they could on yesterday’s RAW to try to keep most of their audience, or even draw interest from fans who had no interest in the show.

WWE calling Monday’s RAW the “season premiere” was their attempt to make the show sound and feel bigger than your average RAW show, and another thing that they did in an attempt to keep their audience from changing the channel was have Sting wrestle for the very first time on WWE’s flagship show.

Dave Metlzer of the Wrestling Observer reported on the post-RAW Wrestling Observer Radio that WWE’s decision to have Sting wrestle on the show was directly in-response to their horrible ratings over the last few weeks, and they’re hoping that Sting’s first ever RAW match will bring the rating to a respectable number.

“[The decision to have Sting wrestle] was the reaction to the ratings. So, we’ll see if it helps. It was certainly a much better show, and a better crowd-reacting show that they’ve had, for the most part, of late.”

The fans in attendance were happy that they were going to get to see Sting wrestle, but they were unhappy with WWE’s choice for his opponent, which was Big Show, who was chosen to face Sting because “The Icon” wanted to be in the ring with someone he knew, and trusted.

Big Show vs. Sting didn’t last long, as Seth Rollins ran in a couple of minutes into the match, causing a disqualification. During the two on one beat-down of Sting, John Cena ran down to make the save, and the match was restarted as a tag-team match — John Cena and Sting vs. Seth Rollins and Big Show.

After several minutes of Big Show and Rollins beating on John Cena, the hot tag was made to Sting, and he ran wild before hitting Seth Rollins with the Scorpion Death Drop and locking on the Scorpion Death Lock, forcing Rollins to tap, which gave Sting his first win in WWE.

Sting making Rollins tap probably means that Rollins is beating Sting on Sunday at Night of Champions, because WWE does like to do the “my turn, your turn” type of booking, and Monday was Sting’s turn.

If Sting does end up winning the title, don’t expect it to be a long title reign. As a matter of fact, even if he beats Rollins, Sting may not walk out of Night of Champions as the new WWE World Champ. Sheamus may, in fact, cash in his Money in the Bank contract and win the title.
