The New York Fashion Week Recap, In Case You Missed It

New York Fashion Week kicked off on Thursday, September 13. Just in case you weren’t able to catch up on all the trendsetting moments of the week-long fashion extravaganza, here’s a quick recap of what’s gone down so far.

Friday started off strong with a dramatic Givenchy presentation, which was the perfect juxtaposition for Saturday and Sunday’s bright and colorful shows from Alexander Wang, Diane von Furstenberg, and Monique Lhuillier. Bright colors ruled the runways at Fashion Week with tangerine, citrine, and melon being hinted as next spring’s biggest colors. Both Prabal Gurun and Lhuillier showcased this fiery color in their shows. Meanwhile, pastel-colored rainbows and clouds were the main focus at Mara Hoffman’s show.

Sunday marked the fourth day of New York Fashion Week. Victoria Beckham’s show kicked off the day, where her gorgeous husband David Beckham and their son Brooklyn sat in the front row. Victoria’s runway show included a lot of breezy and flowy surf-inspired pieces.

Diane von Furstenberg also made headlines on Sunday when she featured this generation’s top models such as Karlie Kloss, Kendall Jenner, Jourdan Dunn, and Gigi and Bella Hadid. There were so many famous faces that it was hard to focus on the flowy and colorful dresses and jumpsuits featured in von Furstenberg’s 70s-styled runway show.

Model Hanne Gaby Odiele made a major feminist statement on her own with her Acne Studios sweater. She definitely didn’t need Taylor Swift’s girl squad.

Everything wasn’t just feminine and flowy at New York Fashion Week. Punk and Goth was also the name of the game at Fashion Week. Kim Kardashian showed off her baby bump in a black sheer Givenchy gown. Sky Ferreira showed off her new shocking blue hairstyle, and Lady Gaga wore a trash bag.

Public School’s Spring 2016 collection for DKNY featured a lot of palazzo pants, parachute-styled coats, silk maxi dresses, and sweater dresses, which made punk feel more grownup.

Streetwear also got its moment at New York Fashion Week. Hood by Air was another designer who received attention for its avant-garde collection. According to a previous report via the Wall Street Journal, director and chief curator of the Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology called the Fashion Week show “sportswear on acid.”

“You reach back and there are things that seem post-Punk. Everything is torn apart. You don’t know what’s going to come down the runway next. There’s a whole kind of gender clash thing going on which is really exciting.”

“You know he likes the bondage, he likes things that are tied up, things that are body exposing, things that you can’t tell what sexy they’re supposed to be for. It’s like sportswear that’s on acid.”

What was the most memorable fashion-forward moment in the runway show? Vogue said it was Hood By Air’s jumpsuit, which exposes the derriere. It’s kind of like a fashion mullet; business in the front, party in the back.

Of course, it’s not Fashion Week if a model or two stumbles on the stage. A handful of models have already fallen on their faces at different presentations and runway shows.

New York Fashion also wasn’t without its star-studded moments. Lauren Hills of Laguna Beach and The Hills fame debuted her very first LC by Lauren Conrad collection, which is also available at Kohl’s. Couples ruled at Fashion Week with Kylie Jenner and Tyga, and Bella Hadid and The Weeknd sitting front and center at various shows.
