Dr. Dre’s Assault Victim: Dee Barnes Says Dr. Dre Grabbed Her By The Hair, Beat Her Head Into A Wall [Video]

There’s a powerful new interview with Dee Barnes gaining buzz on the Huffington Post. That’s because Dee speaks at length for the first time about the horrific night in 1991 that Barnes was attacked by Dr. Dre, in an event that came during the heated time when the rap group N.W.A. was breaking up.

As can be seen in old YouTube videos, Dee was the host of “Pump It Up,” wherein Barnes can be seen interviewing Ice Cube. In the newest interview on HuffPo with Kevin Powell — of the Real World fame — Dee talks about the night that she ran into Dr. Dre at a party, and how Barnes was on her way to play pool with Tupac Shakur. Dee said there had been some heated interviews between the members of N.W.A., and Barnes felt caught in the middle because she wouldn’t choose sides.

A professional journalist, Dee was enamored by MTV hosts like “Downtown” Julie Brown, and Barnes loved that she was able to put her own journalism skills to work in a field that she loved. Dee also loved the music scene, and when Barnes got to know the members of N.W.A., before they were even N.W.A., she eventually grew to know the men well and called them her brothers.

That’s what makes it all the more shocking, according to Dee, when Barnes says that Dr. Dre grabbed her by her hair and beat her head into a wall, dragging Dee into the ladies room until someone finally pulled Dr. Dre off of Barnes in the savage beating.

Dee called the incident with Dr. Dre traumatic, and Barnes was especially disheartened by the fact that none of her so-called brothers reached out to her afterward. Although Dee didn’t want to speak about how long she was in the hospital, Barnes did reveal that she had to resume her job within days, after being taken by ambulance to the hospital after the beating.

The incident involved Dr. Dre getting a $2,500 fine and Dr. Dre doing a PSA about domestic violence. Dee was apparently under a gag order, but Barnes says that Dr. Dre’s protege Eminem joked about Dee in the song “Guilty Conscience,” which mentions Barnes by name.

You gonna take advice from somebody who slapped Dee Barnes?

Dee also stated that the assault by Dr. Dre has left her with migraines for 24 years. Barnes even had a slight headache when doing the interview. Nevertheless Dee spoke of moving forward, all the while appreciative that Dr. Dre at least apologized to Barnes and Michel’le — if not directly — as reported by Billboard, who also accused him of assault.
