New ‘Super Smash Bros.’ Characters To Be Revealed In October

Just when it seems Nintendo has thought of every character from their games to add into Super Smash Bros. (or at least every one of the most recognizable characters), they surprise us with new ideas. According to Master Herald, an ongoing poll on Nintendo Wii U and 3DS is asking gamers who they want to see become the newest Super Smash Bros. character, and the answer may be surprising to most Nintendo fans.

“The voting is open until October 3 and surprisingly, reports late last month came out that Professor Layton from the “Professor Layton” puzzle game on Nintendo DS and 3DS, will be next character that shall join the roster of fighters in ‘Super Smash Bros 4.'”

It’s not entirely firmed up just yet whether Professor Layton will be the new character, but he does seem to be the most obvious choice. Super Smash Bros. also introduced a downloadable content package in April of this year that added four new characters for players to choose from.

There have also been rumors swirling that Britney Spears will be another of the new Super Smash Bros characters. While Gamezone notes that Britney did star in a Gameboy Advanced game called Britney’s Dance Beat (characters must have been involved in a Nintendo game in some way to be in Super Smash Bros), the choice is still highly unlikely — but ’90s pop fans can dream, right?

As you can see, the latest Super Smash Bros. character roster boasts over 40 choices. Additionally, the Wii U and 3DS games contain hidden characters, not all of which are depicted. As Inquisitr reported last month, the names of two characters meant for inclusion in a downloadable content pack were leaked early. These characters were Roy of the Fire Emblem series and Ryu from Street Fighter. In addition to new characters, each new installment of the Super Smash Bros. series has included new maps to play on and occasionally added new game modes as well.

Additionally, Nintendo introduced its Amiibo toy line, a set of action figures which can be scanned into the game using Near Field Communication (the same tech that powers things like Apple Pay), and then appear as in-game characters. Amiibo figures work with Super Smash Bros. For Wii U, and evolve over time based on how the game is played.

Tell us in the comments what you think of Professor Layton as the potential new character for Super Smash Bros. Would you have selected a different character, and why or why not?
