Serena Williams Loss: Possibly The Biggest Upset In History!

Serena Williams is arguably the best female tennis player in the history of the game. However, in the U.S. Open semi finals match, played against Roberta Vinci, Williams unfortunately did not come out victorious. Williams lost to Vinci with a score of 2-6, 6-4, 6-4. However, it’s not the simple fact that Serena didn’t come out victorious that seems to have fans upset. What is getting under the skin of fans is who Williams lost against. Roberta Vinci, the victorious player against Williams, wasn’t even seeded in the U.S. Open; ranking 43rd among her peers according to CNN. However, the rank didn’t seem to matter as she claimed victory over one of the best players ever to walk onto a tennis court. Following the loss, Serena was clearly upset with her performance; offering the following statement.

“I don’t want to talk about how disappointing it is for me… If you have any other questions, I’m open for that.”

So, what is it about Serena Williams’ loss that makes it one of the biggest upsets in tennis history? As For The Win points out, there are several reasons this upset is huge. First and foremost, Serena was a 30 to one favorite to win the match! Those are incredible odds. Also, while this was Serena’s 47th Grand Slam Final, her opponent, Roberta Vinci was playing her first. Just based on these two pieces of data, Serena should have easily came out victorious in the match.

While Serena Williams has an impeccable history in the game of tennis, she simply could keep up. In fact, the match against Roberta Vinci would have been Williams’ 38th consecutive win played against women ranked outside of the top 40. However, that win streak has come to an end!

However, I’ve got to ask the fans… Is it really that bad? I know Serena has built a following, and I know that she has an absolutely incredibly record; one which was tarnished in the match against Vinci. Nonetheless, isn’t everyone entitled to a bad day here and there? After all, Serena Williams is one of very few players in the female tennis league that was on a 33 match grand slam winning spree. They say that what goes up must come down; and Williams has gone higher than just about any other player in the history of tennis.

With all of that said, like most fans, I’m incredibly upset that Serena didn’t win. I think all odds were pointing to yet another win for Williams. Nonetheless, I’m still a fan! Regardless of the match up between Vincin and Williams, Williams, in my eyes is still an incredible athlete and will most likely come back to claim victory in future matches!
