Miley Cyrus Blasts Canada Over Wolf Culling, Wants To ‘Move To The Moon And Take Them All With Me’

Miley Cyrus may have a lot of dead pets, but she draws the line at killing wolves. Cyrus appears to have moved on from her feud with Nicki Minaj, as she took to Instagram on Tuesday and put the entire government of British Columbia on blast over its controversial wolf culling program.

“I ask so much of my fanz, friendz, & family,” Cyrus wrote on Instagram. “But I am shameless when it comes to making changes in a world that at times needs to reevaluate its morals when dealing with kindness and compassion towards animals, humanity, and the environment.”

Miley goes on to ask her 28 million Instagram followers to sign a petition set up by conservation group Pacific Wild.

It should come as no surprise that Miley Cyrus, of all people, would very much like to pack up and go live on the moon. Miley’s desire to bring the entire population of British Columbia’s wolves with her, on the other hand, is puzzling.

If the wolves were somehow relocated to the moon, the problem of culling would be solved quite neatly. But don’t tell Miley that.

Of course, the caribou population might rebound to dangerous levels, resulting in overcrowding and mass starvation. But that would be an issue for another day.

The issue for today, and the issue that Miley Cyrus has a problem with, is British Columbia’s controversial wolf culling program.

The culling is a response to the collapse of the caribou population in the northern Rocky Mountains of British Columbia, where four of the seven herds are hanging on by a thread. Between the four endangered herds, there are only 70 caribou in total, and the provincial government blames wolves.

According to CTV News, one of the herds consists of just 18 caribou, down from 46 in 2009.

CBC News reports that 84 wolves have been killed since the cull started last winter. The cull, which involves shooting wolves from helicopters, is planned to last five years, although it could be extended.

Miley Cyrus, and others like her, contend that this is cruel and unusual punishment for something that may not even be the fault of the wolves to begin with.

Pacific Wild, the conservation group Miley Cyrus tagged in her Instagram posts, is one of the loudest voices raised in disagreement with the assessment that wolves are to blame. In fact, the group blames the government for failing to protect the caribou population from habitat loss.

In a second post that probably seemed clever at the time, Cyrus also entreated readers not to “let squares play the role of the circle of life!”

Whatever that means, Miley’s plea to her fans had a significant impact. A representative of Pacific Wild told Take Part that their website actually crashed after Cyrus made her Instagram posts and linked to their petition.

“Most people don’t wish for their website to crash, but that was a good crash,” Michaela Montaner, a spokeperson for Pacific Wild, told Take Part.

Since Pacific Wild was unaware of Cyrus’ intent to promote the petition, the group was unable to determine just how much of an effect Miley had beyond the crash.

CBC News reports that the petition was still a few thousand signatures short of the needed 200,000 as of noon on Wednesday. It is unclear exactly how much of a boost Miley Cyrus gave the campaign, but one thing is clear.

More people are talking about the culling now than before Cyrus’ Instagram posts.

Do you agree with Miley Cyrus and Pacific Wild that the government of British Columbia is unfairly scapegoating the wolves? Or would you rather both Miley and the wolves blast off to the moon and stay there?
