Kurt Sutter’s ‘The Bastard Executioner’ Is A Show You ‘Don’t Want To Miss,’ Has Some Similarities To ‘Sons Of Anarchy’

With the premiere of Kurt Sutter’s newest series, The Bastard Executioner, only a week away, the initial reviews indicate that this is one show you won’t want to miss. Although the new series is set in a vastly different time period than Sons of Anarchy, the show actually shares a lot of similar themes with the hit biker drama.

The Bastard Executioner is set in 14th century Wales and centers on the story of Wilkin Brattle (Lee Jones). Brattle is a warrior knight who vows to leave behind his former life of violence to pursue a more peaceful existence. However, Brattle is quickly confronted with the violent realities inherent in his world and is forced to once again pick up his sword and become the executioner.

While the storyline is certainly different than Sutter’s previous works, a review released by Deadline reveals that the two shows are actually more alike than they are different. In particular, the shows share themes of devotion, loss, family, treachery, and revenge.

In addition to sharing similar themes with Sons of Anarchy, The Bastard Executioner is also set to be just as violent as Sons Of Anarchy or perhaps even more violent than the biker drama. In fact, based on set photos released by Screen Crush, the new series will feature plenty of fiery destruction, bloody battle scenes, and mysterious characters. Given the fact that Sutter has plenty of experience with these aspects, the new series is certain to be on par with anything he’s done in the past.

Meanwhile, starring alongside Jones in The Bastard Executioner are a number of Sons of Anarchy alum. While Sutter will be playing the part of The Dark Mute, his wife, Katey Sagal, is set to play the significant role of Annora of the Alders. Annora is a mysterious healer who, with the protection of The Dark Mute, helps advise Brattle throughout the series.

Rounding out the list of cast members includes True Blood’s Stephen Moyer, who will be playing the part of Brattle’s most trusted friend and associate, Milus Corbett. At the same time, The Americans star Matthew Rhys is set to appear at some point in the series in a guest role.

With the series set to include a proven and well-rounded list of cast members, The Bastard Executioner should make for another successful run for Sutter and company.

The Bastard Executioner is scheduled to premiere on September 15 on FX.
