Seattle Mariners Rumors: Hottest Team In MLB Wins Again

Seattle Mariners rumors reveal that they are the hottest team in baseball. Mariners rumors about the team possibly sneaking into the 2015 MLB Playoffs are also starting to surface. On Sunday, September 6, the Mariners beat the Oakland Athletics to win a fifth straight game. It also completed a series sweep of the Athletics, but is it too late for the Mariners to really get back into contention?

Hisashi Iwakuma gave up one run in 6 1/3 innings of work, pushing his record on the season to 7-3. A group of relievers helped keep the Athletics from taking the lead back, and closer Tom Wilhelmsen shut down the Athletics to finish off the game. Wilhelmsen has been one of the best pitchers on the staff in recent weeks, and this was already his 10th save of the season since taking over as the closer.

A remarkable statistic is that all of Wilhelmsen’s saves have come after the All-Star break. He posted a 0.230 ERA in August and hasn’t given up a run in four appearances during September. As for the Seattle Mariners’ rumors about the team making a run at the postseason, the odds are still stacked against them. Even with winning seven of their last 10 games, the Mariners have only improved to 66-71 on the season. That puts the team six games behind the Texas Rangers for the second wild card slot.

There are only 25 games left for the Mariners to make up that six-game deficit, but the upcoming schedule gives them a real shot. The Mariners play the Rangers seven times, beginning with a four-game series that runs from September 7-10. The Mariners also have six games against the Los Angeles Angels, another team they need to pass in the standings. It means that they aren’t eliminated from postseason contention just yet.

There are likely no baseball analysts that would put money on the Mariners winning enough games to make the 2015 MLB Playoffs. There is almost no room for error and the team would basically need to sweep the Texas Rangers and Los Angeles Angels. While not impossible, the team hasn’t proven itself capable over what has been a really grueling season. It would certainly be a remarkable piece of team history if these Seattle Mariners rumors played out in a favorable way, but a worst-case scenario is that fans get to see that the future might not be so dim at Safeco Field.
