Sienna Miller has vanished from Black Mass, the highly hyped new film starring Johnny Depp as a mobster. Although Sienna was excellent in the film, according to the director, he felt that Miller played a role that needed to be cut for Black Mass to be its best, reported the Boston Globe.

With Johnny in the role of Whitey Bulger, Sienna played his gal pal, Catherine Greig.

“[Miller was] fantastic,” said Black Mass director Scott Cooper. “It came down to narrative choices.”

And in Cooper’s eyes, that meant focusing on the part of the mobster’s life that didn’t include his girlfriend. Before she was cut, Sienna chatted about working on the movie. Miller revealed that because Black Mass required a Boston accent, she even turned to a coach for help as well as viewing movies that had South Boston as a background.

“I was sort of religiously watching every film ever set in South Boston: ‘Good Will Hunting,’ ‘Gone Baby Gone,’ ‘The Town.’ Catherine had a thick accent, so I hope I do it justice,” said Sienna before the bad news that she was cut.

Miller was removed from Black Mass, however, because the director felt that the time Whitey spent with his girlfriend living a fugitive lifestyle detracted from what Cooper felt was the prime topic.

But while Black Mass in the end was negative news for Sienna’s career, it’s been a goldmine for Depp, whom Cooper praised to People.

The director noted that Johnny succeeded in transforming himself physically and mentally into a mob boss. To achieve that look, Johnny and Cooper analyzed police tapes and footage so that Depp could be true to the nature of the gangster.

“For him to completely give himself over to Whitey’s psyche and play not only an extremely broken man and haunted man, but a man who is at turns vicious and cunning was memorizing to watch. I think Johnny gives a full body portrait that I hope will rank among some of his great performances of all time.”

You can watch Depp (and not Miller) in Black Mass starting September 18.

Because Black Mass premiered at the Venice Film Festival, the red carpet gave Johnny and wife Amber Heard the opportunity to demonstrate that although they have a marked age difference (he’s 52; she’s 29), they still are in love, reported the Daily Mail.

Depp and Amber married in February, and they’ve been apart for awhile. But they canoodled for the cameras in a way that made it clear that they’re still very much in love.

The rumors of problems in their marriage stemmed from the lack of public photos together since their marriage. However, no signs of any problems were revealed during their red carpet appearance together.

As for Sienna’s appearance at the premiere? Miller apparently decided not to attend the Black Mass star-studded event after being cut, reported MTV News.

Instead, Dakota Johnson stole some of the spotlight.
